The Cartagena Port Authority wins the EMAS 2019 award (26/11/2019)

The Cartagena Port Authority has won the 2019 EMAS environmental management award in the category of small public organizations.

The award was presented at the ceremony held in Bilbao and which had a broad representation of the Port of Cartagena.

Since 2005, the European Commission has organized the European EMAS Awards, rated as the most prestigious in environmental management.

The European Commission awards these awards in order to identify the best strategies and measures carried out by the entities registered in the EMAS Community instrument, an eco-management and eco-audit system to which companies can voluntarily join.

The awards are given to organizations that have demonstrated outstanding environmental excellence in their category.

In this edition, the contest is inspired by the motto "EMAS as the engine of change towards a sustainable transition".

A jury formed by experts and representatives of the organizations awarded in the previous edition will decide the winning entities.

The Cartagena Port Authority, which holds the Presidency of the EMAS Club of the Murcia region, has been awarded for its environmental commitment.

The Port of Cartagena is a reference in the Spanish port system for its efficient and sustainable management of its services.

It carries out a multitude of actions in different areas of environmental sustainability, such as: efficient use of energy, responsible water management, cleaning and control of port waters, reduction of fuel consumption, efficiency in waste management, control of atmospheric emissions, creation of the Chair of the Environment with the UPCT and the UMU, organization of school and institutional visits to the port of Cartagena, motivation, awareness and environmental training of both the staff of the APC, as well as the Port Community and of the Society in general, and finally, it presides over the EMAS Club of the region of Murcia, the main engine of dissemination of EMAS in the Region.

Within its environmental commitment from the APC, different port companies have been promoted to obtain the EMAS registry, these are the consignee Agencia Marítima Blázquez, Ership that is the main operator in solid bulk, Cartago Marpol waste management of ships, Timab Iberian chemical company, Laboratorios Munuera that performs water quality controls, Iberdrola Escombreras energy generation company and, Moorings of Cartagena that have been the last to obtain this certification.

The five national candidates selected to compete at European level by the General Directorate of Biodiversity and Environmental Quality, the General Directorate of Water and representatives of some autonomous communities, are: Laboratorios Servir SL, based in Castilla-La Mancha, in the category of large private companies;

Victoria Eugenia Hospital, based in Andalusia, in that of medium-sized private companies;

Agrian Prodal, SL, based in Galicia, in that of small private companies;

Port Authority of Barcelona, ​​based in Catalonia, in the category of medium-sized public organizations.

The main strategic axis of the EMAS Club of the Murcia region, chaired by the Port Authority of Cartagena, is the impulse of the "Business Excellence" in environmental matters in the region of Murcia, through the EMAS registry (Community Management System and environmental audit).

This EMAS environmental management and audit system also contributes in a very significant way to the implementation of the circular economy, the achievement of the Objectives of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The entities registered in EMAS are qualified to carry out pioneering measures in the realization of a sustainable transition.
