XX anniversary of the creation of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (30/10/2019)

In the academic act on the occasion of the XX anniversary of the creation of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, the president points out that he has become "one of the great references of higher education for all of Spain"

He appreciates the incorporation of women into scientific careers "in which there seemed to be an insurmountable obstacle for them to access them", and stresses that "achieving full equality is an objective for which we all must work"

The head of the regional Executive, Fernando López Miras, presided today the academic ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), where he valued "the contribution that the university makes at all times to the development of the Region" and stressed that "our future as a society is going through a growing qualification, here is the talent of the future; therefore, the demand for better training must be growing."

"Our society needs more and more to bet on innovation, for technology, for a continuous modernization of the business and institutional fabric," said the president, who emphasized that "progress must come hand in hand with knowledge , of the specialization, of the qualification that leaves the classrooms, the departments and laboratories of the UPCT ".

"We must be able to evolve, to improve every day, and the 20 years of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena mark the path that we must continue to travel," said the president of the Community.

Thus, he stressed that "the UPCT has been able to grow, to incorporate extraordinary teachers and that its graduates have an outstanding qualification."

López Miras remarked that, after two decades of work, the UPCT has become "one of the great referents of higher education, not only for the Region, but for all of Spain."

In this regard, he extolled his contribution to the society of which he is a part and explained that "its opening had an immediate effect on the urban landscape, recovering old facilities that were no longer in use."

"Traces of a military past whose origin was in an eighteenth century marked precisely by the Enlightenment, culture and the desire to study," he said.

Scientific vocations in women

During his speech, López Miras valued the incorporation of women into scientific and professional careers "in which there seemed to be an insurmountable obstacle for them to access them."

He also pointed out that "achieving full equality is an objective for which we all have to work" and said that "our commitment to do so must go beyond words and translate into facts."

"It is something that is part of the DNA of the Polytechnic University; an objective in which we are very satisfied to be able to work together and obtain results," said the head of the Regional Executive, who recalled the 'Piedad de la Cierva' scholarships to support the best students in their enrollment in the STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) of the University of Murcia and the Polytechnic of Cartagena.
