The tent 'The pharmacist you need' shows in Cartagena the value of pharmaceutical services (25/10/2019)

This tent has been located in the Plaza de San Francisco and has offered professional assistance services related to the proper use of medications, the measurement of blood pressure and the calculation of cardiovascular risk, measurement of cholesterol and blood glucose, nutritional advice, support to quit smoking and education about the proper use of medications.

The tent, installed by the Spanish Society of Family and Community Pharmacy (SEFAC), TEVA and ratiopharm, has been attended by volunteer pharmacists, specialized in the different services.

The tent has been visited by different local and health personalities, such as Manuel Padín Sitcha, Second Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Tourism, Commerce, Health and Consumer Affairs, and María Teresa Martínez Ros, General Director of Planning, Research, Pharmacy and Customer Service Citizen of the Regional Ministry of Health of Murcia, who have been accompanied by the president of SEFAC, Jesús C. Gómez and the president of SEFAC Region of Murcia, Modesta I. Gil.

The objective of this initiative is to show the population the potential assistance that community pharmacists have and their services in the field of medicines and health promotion.

Bring the population to the health and healthcare potential of professional pharmaceutical assistance services (SPFA) and which, in many cases, is unknown.

This is the main objective of the pharmacist you need, an initiative promoted by the Spanish Society of Family and Community Pharmacy (SEFAC), TEVA and ratiopharm.

The initiative has consisted of the installation of a tent with different SPFAs in the Plaza de San Francisco with the objective of reinforcing the vision of the community pharmacist as an indispensable sanitary agent in the National Health System and in society and publicizing new services that Pharmacies can offer to improve prevention and health of the population.

This tent, open from 10.30 to 18.30 hours, has been visited by different local and health personalities, such as Manuel Padín Sitcha, Second Deputy Mayor and Councilor for the Tourism, Commerce, Health and Consumer Affairs Area, and María Teresa Martínez Ros, General Director of Planning, Research, Pharmacy and Citizen Service of the Ministry of Health of the Region of Murcia, which have been accompanied by the president of SEFAC, Jesús C. Gómez and the president of SEFAC Region of Murcia, Modesta I. Gil.

"All the services of the tent have been protocolized and agreed with medical scientific societies with the aim of making known to the public a sample of all the assistance activity that community pharmacists can carry out not only in the field of medicines, but also in prevention and public health, "explained Gil, who added that" many of these services are not yet sufficiently known or valued by the population. "

In this way, the population has been able to access services such as information on the proper use of medicines, measurement of blood pressure and calculation of cardiovascular risk, nutritional advice, support to quit smoking, inhaler management, cholesterol measurement, blood glucose and insulin use.

In each of these services, the attending population has verified what community pharmacists can contribute to improve their health.

For example, in diabetes, pharmacists can contribute decisively to its early detection.

Not surprisingly, the prevalence of diabetes in Spain is above 13 percent and more than 6 percent (half of people with existing diabetes) are undiagnosed.

Another of the pathologies in which the pharmacist can do a lot is in the field of high blood pressure and vascular risk, a health problem that is related to the death of ten million people a year in the world, according to data from the World Health Organization.

In fact, pharmacies can be a health center of great importance to detect the risk of hypertension.

With regard to lung health, the pharmacist can also provide services such as smoking cessation or prevention and screening for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

COPD is a disease suffered by more than two million people in Spain, it is the fourth leading cause of death and has an underdiagnosis higher than 70 percent, so pharmacists can contribute decisively to detect patients at risk and, in coordination with doctors, improve adherence to treatment, as well as in the approach to smoking.

Precisely, the lack of adherence to treatments is also an aspect linked to education with the use of medicines.

This service, which has also been included in the tent, can help not only prevent health problems but also achieve greater efficiency of available health resources.

Apart from the health effects of hospital admissions, the lack of adherence causes a high cost that could be invested in other actions if the knowledge of community pharmacists is better used.

In fact, it is estimated that about half of patients with chronic pathologies do not correctly comply with their pharmacological treatment or leave it.

The tent The pharmacist you need is an initiative that, in addition to Cartagena, has already gone through more than thirty cities.

In total, more than 5,300 people have attended these tents and 98 percent of the attendees have considered the services offered as good or very good.

In addition, 88 percent say they know their health status better after passing through the tent.
