The City Council of Cartagena asks the Government Delegation for explanations for the abandonment of 30 Algerians arriving in pateras (20/09/2019)

The City Council of Cartagena has demanded urgent explanations from the Government Delegation after hearing about the abandonment by the Police Station of some thirty Algerians, who arrived in the past few days at the port of Cartagena aboard boats.

The Municipal Government has verified that the humanitarian aid procedure has not been applied and the City Council has not been given notice to manage its accommodation, circumstances that imply the breach of the established protocols and the agreements reached between the Government Delegation and the City Council.

The mayor has asked the Department of Social Services to set up an aid device, through a social worker and a translator, to try to locate immigrants, to see if they remain in Cartagena without accommodation or means, or if they have displaced outside the municipality, as the first indications point.

For the municipal government, the procedure followed is extremely serious and has humanitarian, sanitary and security implications.

In November 2017, sixty Algerians were abandoned under similar circumstances and the Cartagena City Council also showed their disagreement.

After confirming the information, Mayor Ana Belén Castejón, has urgently convened the Vice Mayor, Noelia Arroyo, and the Councilor Mercedes García, as well as those responsible for Social Services, to analyze the situation and inform the Working Table of Immigration of the City Council.
