The Mar Menor Forum points out its first measures with a view to Thursday's meeting with the minister (02/09/2019)

The 'Forum of inter-administrative coordination of the Mar Menor' has held its first meeting this morning at the City Council of Cartagena after becoming less than a month ago as a control and coordination body for the recovery of the salt lagoon.

The meeting in which the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment of the Region of Murcia, Antonio Luengo, and the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, participated, together with representatives of the other riverside municipalities such as San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Los Alcázares, and the water commissioner of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, José Carlos González, has served to put on the table the powers of each administration, the projects executed and those planned for the Mar Menor, in order to advance in its preservation in a coordinated way.

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has described it as an “intense and fruitful†meeting in which each administration has distributed the tasks corresponding to their competences with the objective that in the coming months the Mar Menor will present a better aspect .

The first mayor has positively valued the presence of all administrations, "which suggests that this has to go well and we will put all of us."

Regarding the meeting that will be held on Thursday, September 5, the Minister for Ecological Transition in operation Teresa Ribera, and the Minister of the Environment of the Region of Murcia Antonio Luengo, Castejón is confident "in the good predisposition and sensitivity" of Ribera.

The City Council of Cartagena has prepared a proposal of actions that depend on the State Administration so that the minister knows them in the meeting with the regional counselor.

The first mayor of the city has been eager to start reflecting a calendar of actions, with the necessary deadlines, budgets and permits "so that there are no more excuses" and the tasks of the Government of Spain, of the Autonomous Community are defined and the Cartagena City Council in this regard.

The mayor of the city recalled that "exceptionally and urgently" the municipal council will create a heading in the 2020 Budget "to address infrastructure and actions in our coastal towns of the Mar Menor."

In addition, it has been agreed that, once a month, the river councils, the Autonomous Community and the Government of Spain will meet to update their joint work on the Mar Menor.

Likewise, the technicians of these administrations will meet every fifteen days to evaluate the actions that are carried out in the area.

ZERO DRINK

For his part, the counselor Antonio Luengo has detailed the measures that he will request from the Minister for the Ecological Transition in office, Teresa Ribera, at the meeting they will hold on Thursday, September 5.

Among them, the implementation of the Zero Discharge Plan by the Ministry for Ecological Transition "to tackle problems efficiently from the Mar Menor."

This will mean the start-up of the pumping of the waters of the Rambla del Albujón to El Mojón for reuse.

A technical document will also be delivered to the minister with the actions to be carried out on the beaches of the Mar Menor.

The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment of the Region of Murcia has said that it is also important to supervise and maintain the municipal sanitation networks, plan the cleanliness of the beaches for the summer of 2020, collaborate with the police to detect possible environmental violations and create a network that separates rainwater from sanitation.
