Students, teachers and staff meet again at the Harvest Festival of the UPCT (20/08/2019)

Fifty students, teachers, researchers, administration staff and family members of the university community have participated this morning in the collection of the Merseguera grape with which the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) produces its Tomás Ferro wine.

“We started last year to celebrate this Harvest Festival.

Then we attended a score and today we have been more than 60 â€, explains the director of the School of Agronomists of the UPCT, Arantxa Aznar.

The Polytechnic of Cartagena has planted in its Experimental Agro-Food Station Tomás Ferro a hectare of grapes of the Merseguera variety, traditional of the field of Cartagena and whose wine use has recovered the UPCT.

Last year 6,400 kilos of grapes were collected, with which 3,000 liters of white wine were bottled, and this campaign is expected to harvest a similar figure.

The wine will be ready for consumption at Christmas.

Tomorrow will begin the production of the wine in the cellar that the UPCT has, for which it will use a large capacity press provided by Bodegas Luzón, a company that together with Agrifusa collaborates with the Polytechnic advising the production of Tomás Ferro wine.

“Working with leading companies in the Region of Murcia allows students to keep up to date with what is being done in the sector and facilitates their labor incorporation,†said Aznar, indicating that one of the students who has gone to the grape harvest will begin in a few weeks to do internships at Bodegas Luzón.

“I really want to start the practices to put into practice the knowledge that we have acquired,†commented the student, Clara Fernández, satisfied with the experience of participating in the production of Tomás Ferro wine.

After the unraveling and fermentation processes, the wine will rest until it is bottled in December.

On this occasion and for the first time the UPCT will produce 1,000 liters of wine fermented in barrels.

A hat to protect from the sun, a lunch to keep the forces and a box of wine have received the students, teachers and volunteers who participated in the harvest this morning.
