The municipal government will implement new measures to improve cleanliness and infrastructure in the Mar Menor (24/07/2019)

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, accompanied by the vice mayor, Noelia Arroyo, met on the morning of this Wednesday, July 24 with the councilors responsible for the Department of Infrastructure, Urban Planning, Environment and Health, as well as with the service headquarters of the same, to know first hand the actions that are being carried out to solve the problems in the coastal towns of the Mar Menor and implement new measures.

This is an internal work meeting in which, as explained by the mayor, 'we have reviewed the cleanliness of the beaches, the pests of flies and mosquitoes, gardening, spas, in short, we have analyzed in what phase are the projects and actions that affect the riverside towns that make up the maritime façade of the Mar Menor, both Los Urrutias and Los Nietos, as well as the rest of the towns'.

As for the cleanliness of the beaches, whose municipal competence reaches the shore, it is being studied to intensify it during these months.

Castejón announced that 'as soon as possible we will announce the results of the orders we have made to each of the Councils, and we will continue to direct our demands to the other administrations involved, such as the Autonomous Community and the government of Spain, to provide solutions to the Mar Menor and advance projects such as the promenade of Los Urrutias'.

Plague of mosquitoes and flies

On the other hand, from the Department of Health, directed by the deputy mayor Manuel Padín, the work has been constant throughout the month to tackle the mosquito plague that has affected, above all, areas of the Mar Menor.

After the meeting that was held on July 8 with neighbors, businessmen and technicians, the guidelines of the work to be carried out were marked and the Ministry of Agriculture was asked for authorization for biological control treatments against the mosquito development focus in the stagnant water of the salt flats of Lo Poyo, being a protected space.

Once the permission was received from the Community on the 12th, the spotlight was immediately acted on, and larvicidal treatments were carried out throughout the week, from July 15 to 19.

Likewise, work is continuing to be reinforced with adult treatment in public areas, such as parks and gardens, Los Urrutias, Punta Brava and El Carmolí, as well as in Los Nietos.

In addition, disinsection actions are still being carried out in the public areas of the area, although the problem of mosquitoes has dropped dramatically.

However, a larvicide treatment control program will be maintained in the natural area of the Lo Poyo area, together with a reinforcement of adulticide treatments in the other areas.

“From the Department of Health we are working tirelessly, and we will continue to do so, to reduce the problem of pests and that the Mar Menor area, which now greatly increases its population in summer, is the natural and tourist enclave that all We wish, ”said the mayor of the area.

In the rest of the municipality, the work program established for the control of mosquitoes in public areas, as well as the control service of the tiger mosquito, with 72 traps in 36 areas of the municipality continues to be applied.
