Cartagena becomes the center of the Renaissance with the exhibition on the figure of Leonardo Da Vinci (27/06/2019)

The Plaza José María Artés de Cartagena, located near the Consistorial Palace, hosted this morning, Thursday June 27, the opening of the exhibition 'Leonardo: observe, question, experiment'.

This exhibition, which can be visited until July 23, is the result of the collaboration of the City of Cartagena and the 'La Caixa' Foundation, under the collaboration agreement recently signed by both institutions.

The Château du Clos Lucé - Leonardo da Vinci Park, where Da Vinci passed his last years of life, also collaborates in this exhibition.

The inauguration of the exhibition was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, the Councilor for Culture, David Martinez, the Councilor for Culture, Carlos Piñana, along with the delegate of the Banking Foundation 'La Caixa' in the Region of Murcia, Lourdes Toribio, the director of the Business Area of CaixaBank in Cartagena, Carlos Merelo and the curator of the exhibition, Érika Goyarrola.

With the organization of this project, 'La Caixa' and the City of Cartagena are added to the commemoration of the fifth centenary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).

Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, draftsman, engineer, architect, urbanist, naturalist, anatomist, musician, philosopher and inventor;

an authentic polymath whose ideas remain, five hundred years later, modern and premonitory.

He spent the last three years of his life in France, where he served King Francis I as a royal engineer.

Today, the castle where he lived in the town of Amboise, the Clos Lucé, hosts the Leonardo da Vinci Park and is a reference center for the knowledge and dissemination of his legacy.

Experimenta 'has had the collaboration of this prestigious center for the creation of the project, and with the scientific advice of the historian Pascal Brioist.

The Deputy Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, said that "the city is the birthplace of inventors like Isaac Peral" and thanks to the exhibition on the figure of Leonardo Da Vinci, "scientific and technological vocations" are promoted and "the critical spirit is fostered" "Among citizens, an engine that helps change the world.

He has also highlighted the work done by the UPCT in the field of research.

'La Caixa' works to bring Culture and knowledge closer to audiences of all ages and levels of education.

Among its cultural activities, it organizes numerous traveling exhibitions in those cities and municipalities that do not have their own CaixaForum center, with the aim of contributing to citizen awareness through artistic, scientific and social content.

In addition, with its 'Art on the Street' program, it aims to turn the public space into an open-air museum.

According to the delegate of the Banking Foundation 'La Caixa' in the Region of Murcia, Lourdes Toribio, 'Culture is paramount', hence this exhibition is the twenty-second that reaches the port city.

Also from 'La Caixa', the director of the Business Area of CaixaBank in Cartagena, Carlos Merelo, stressed that 'just as Leonardo Da Vinci has changed the History of Humanity, Cartagena is a city that has also marked it'.

The exhibition takes place in two spaces: an interior one, with an audiovisual show and games that connect Leonardo's thought with our day-to-day life;

and an exterior one, with four large models that faithfully reproduce some of Leonardo's most modern and premonitory ideas.

Inside the exhibition, visitors can deepen Leonardo's thinking.

A great audiovisual projection, produced expressly for the exhibition, welcomes visitors by presenting them any day of our daily life inspired by the look of Leonardo.

Next, visitors will find seven interactive games - analog and digital - with which they can play to understand, experiment to create, and discover, after Leonardo's achievements in the most varied disciplines, the common denominator of intelligence and sensitivity:

'A common secret' invites to connect elements that apparently are not related.

From four feminine portraits of Leonardo, 'Is it or is it not?'

It makes visitors focus their eyes on a point, to train their observation capacity.

'Behind the shadow' delves into the concepts of light and shadow, one of the great distinctive features in Leonardo's work, and teaches the importance of thinking with your hands: touch to know.

'Disconnection' puts into practice the ability to decompose complex objects into different elements that have a specific function within the set, or that retain a similarity of form.

'Circuito de ingenio' is a team game in which some of the mechanisms that Da Vinci devised are shown, and which reinforces the idea of collaboration and teamwork thanks to which science and technology have advanced.

'Automatic action' is based on the physical experimentation of a series of mechanisms that offer different movements.

'Leonardo's notebook' tests observation and visual retentivity from works of genius, while exposing some lessons drawn from his 'Treatise on painting'.

The interaction continues abroad, with the exhibition of four scale models.

These are faithful interpretations of the original drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, built with materials from our time.

For its realization, cutting-edge technology has been employed and a team of engineers specialized in the construction of robots and prototypes has been employed:

Air screw

It is not a flying machine, but a theoretical exploration to show that the shape of the Archimedes screw could be useful to overcome the density of the air.

It is considered that, in some way, this sketch represents the first prototype of the future helicopter.

Vitruvian man.

Inspired by the work of the Roman architect Vitruvius, this famous drawing, accompanied by anatomical notes, is a study of the proportions of the human body.

It constitutes a graphic demonstration of the architectural and geometric perfection of the human body, which can fit into a circle and into a square.

Machine flying.

Although inspired by the flight of birds, Leonardo never drew the wings, but only structures formed from reeds and ropes that inspired the creation of the hang glider.

To reconstruct the whole model, drawings of different codices have been used.

Paddle boat.

Leonardo sought to increase the speed of the oars, reduce the number of men needed to move the boat and get more space for cargo.

It can be considered as an antecedent of Mississippi paddle boats.

The augmented reality makes an appearance in the sample with the free application 'Leonardo CaixaForum' (downloadable in Apple Store and Google Play Store), designed as an interpretation tool.

The visitors, scanning the QR codes that they will find in the sample, will be able to see what the models would have had with the original materials of the time (iron, wood, rope, leather, linen), and what their movements would have been like Leonardo I had imagined them.

Finally, the curator of this exhibition, Érika Goyarrola, explained that with this exhibition citizens can "get into the mind of Leonardo Da Vinci", a genius and a historical character that has marked a before and after in the History of The humanity.
