High school students supervised by the UPCT design and build a labyrinth to drain dams (25/06/2019)

Students of the Research Baccalaureate of various institutes of the Region of Murcia exposed this Tuesday in the Auditorium Víctor Villegas of Murcia a total of 81 research projects, twenty of them tutored by professors of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), in the VI IDIES Congress.

Among the projects that have led teachers of the Polytechnic has highlighted the design of a labyrinth-type dump to drain dams, for which students of the IES Pedro Guillén de Archena made a paper model and then manufactured it on a 3D printer of the UPCT Later on, it will be able to test its capacity to evacuate avenues in the twelve meter long experimental channel that the Polytechnic has in one of its Hydraulic Engineering laboratories.

This project, supervised by the UPCT professor José María Carrillo and the teacher of the Joaquín Esteve institute, is part of the research project 20879 / PI / 18 funded by the Séneca Foundation directed by the researcher of the UPCT together with the director of the School of Roads and Mines of the Polytechnic, Antonio Vigueras.

In this way, high school students have participated in a real R & D & I project.

In another hydraulic study, supervised by Carrillo and by the UPCT doctoral student Francisca Marco, students from the IES Saavedra Fajardo of Murcia used a 3D scanner to analyze how the shape of a river changes due to erosion and sedimentation.

Market studies, design and marketing of products made with recycled plastic, an irrigation monitoring and control system based on Arduino, studies of the fractal behavior of seismic waves, the use of Android sensors to implement an indoor GPS, the mathematical tools for make animated films, the study of the nutritional labeling of food groups, approaches to the social economy or the legal regime of the labor society and the characterization and functional recycling of plastics removed from the beaches are some of the other topics of research supervised by UPCT teachers.

The UPCT offers through its Scientific Culture Unit, which has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the tutoring of research projects of high school students.
