Researchers from the UPCT and Carlos III develop robots to help people who live alone (13/06/2019)

Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) and the Carlos III University of Madrid are designing assistance robots to help elderly people living alone.

Devices that look similar to a tamagotchi, although somewhat larger, the size of a small dog, will contribute to improving the autonomy and mood of people with Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative pathologies.

The device they develop is halfway between a virtual butler and an intelligent speaker, similar to Google, Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa.

The first prototype is being developed in the Final Degree Project of the student of the degree in Industrial Technologies, José Antonio Jiménez Viuda.

For its design, researchers have compiled the opinions and needs of student volunteers from the University of the Elderly and those associated with AFAL (Association of Families and Patients with Alzheimer's in Cartagena and the Shire).

This project will be presented next Friday, June 14 at the 10th Training Conference 'Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative pathologies.

A challenge of the 21st century '

This project tries to lay the foundations for future developments linked to cooperative assistance robotics.

According to Joaquín Roca, professor of the area of ​​Electronic Technology of the UPCT, "a robotic device, developed by the researchers of Carlos III and in charge of aspects such as helping to cook, to feed the person, among other things collaborates in a active with the robotic assistant in development by the UPCT ".

The researchers of the UPCT will develop another device, which would be a mobile robot that interacts with the device of the Madrid university and will send information on mood, vital signs, level of activity of the person, among others.

These two devices will work cooperatively, according to Professor Roca.

This project, "Intelligent heterogeneous multi-robot team for the assistance of elderly people (HIMTAE)", has recently started and has been funded in the 2018 call for "Research and Development R & D Projects" of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities .

Barber Castaño and Santiago Garrido Bullón, principal investigators of the UC3M, assigned to the Robotics Lab, one of the pioneering centers of Robotics and Automation both nationally and internationally.

This subproject includes tasks of perception, planning, navigation of robots and grip, which will entail a great task of integration, the researchers comment.

At the same time, it will be necessary to integrate the robotic subsystems of the two universities, the researchers point out.

This multidisciplinary project integrates knowledge of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Domotics, Biomedical Engineering and Psychology.

It has the participation of researchers from the faculty of Psychology at the University of Murcia.
