Cartagena stands in solidarity with the Gypsy People (08/04/2019)

The City Council of Cartagena joins the Commemoration of the International Day of the Gypsy People, a date that recalls the First Roma / Gypsy World Congress, held in London on April 8, 1971, in which the flag and the gypsy anthem were instituted.

A green and blue flag, symbolizing the sky and the field, with a red car wheel in the center, symbolizing the path from India and freedom.

The gypsy hymn, Gelem, gelem (Anduve, anduve), remembers the gypsies and gypsies victims of the Nazi holocaust.

In the Town Hall Square, the reading of the Gypsy Manifesto, the hoisting of the flag and the piano interpretation of the anthem to claim the rights of the Gypsy People took place.

The event was attended by the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García and the councilors of the government, Manuel Mora, David Martínez and Carmen Martín, the councilors of the municipal corporation, José López, Pilar Marcos, Manuel Padín, Francisco Calderón, Esperanza Nieto, Antonio Calderón and Carolina Palazón and representatives of the Councils of Social Services and Equality and of organisms and associations that fight for the rights of the gypsies.

One of them, the Association of Gypsies Feminists Diversity Cartagena, its representative, Carmen Fernandez, one of those in charge of reading the manifesto, has affirmed that it is "necessary for governments to create specific and efficient measures to fight against anti-Gypsyism."

In addition, he recalled the wave of racism that is suffering the Gypsy People in France and Rome.

The Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García, has shown her support for the gypsies living in Cartagena and stressed that "there is still much work to be done to achieve full visibility of this ethnic group and thus avoid making the same mistakes of the past as the persecutions of the gypsies or the Nazi holocaust. "

The Gypsy People has claimed the following points in the manifesto:

The proposal of actions aimed at achieving harmonious coexistence between the different groups and cultures that make up our society.

The development and promotion of our culture in all its manifestations.

Maintain institutional support for budget items for training or promotion of employment.

A process of integration into the labor market for others, which implies the improvement of the educational level and professional training.

In addition, professionalize the self-employed.

The gypsies and gypsies want to participate and promote actions in order to eliminate the exclusion factors that place the Spanish gypsy community at a social, economic and labor disadvantage.

After the reading of the manifesto and the raising of the flag accompanied by the interpretation of the anthem on the piano, two distinctions have been delivered to two senior members of the gypsy community: Juan Antonio Moreno Salguero and Consuelo Escudero Diaz.

According to Carmen Fernández, "the Gypsy People have their greatest treasure, their greatest wisdom and their greatest blessing in our elders."

Juan García, regional delegate of the Federation of Gypsy Associations, has affirmed that this act is "to honor those people who, because they are gypsies, have been persecuted, tortured and murdered".

In addition, he asked that "we be recognized as a people by the institutions because we have introduced flamenco in Spain and within the dictionary there are many words of Caló origin that the RAE has ignored".

After the act of distinctions, handkerchiefs and aprons of colors and polka dots and flowers have been distributed and they have finished the ceremony with the traditional Ceremony of the River, an offering to the victims of the Nazi holocaust, known as 'Samudaripen', in the Cola de Ballena , in the Port of Cartagena.

In addition, the nights of today and of April 9, the Fountain of the Peral submarine will be illuminated with the colors of the gypsy flag.
