The President of the Government visits the Consistorial Palace and the Roman Amphitheater (28/03/2019)

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez Castejón, visited today, Thursday, March 28, Cartagena where he has signed the Golden Book of the City and has learned from the archaeologists the progress of the excavations carried out in the Roman Amphitheater.

The visit of institutional character, has begun at the edge of one o'clock in the afternoon in the Consistorial Palace where it has been received at the foot of the car by the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón.

He then greeted the deputy mayor of the Government Team, Juan Pedro Torralba, Carmen Martín del Amor, David Martínez Nogueras, Mercedes García and Manuel Mora and the spokespersons for the municipal groups of the Opposition, Francisco Espejo, José López, Manuel Padín and Pilar Marcos.

President Sánchez was accompanied on his visit to Cartagena by the president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras;

the president of the Regional Assembly, Rosa Peñalver, the Government delegate, Diego Conesa, and the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Pedro Saura.

After the traditional photo on the main stairway of the City Hall, President Sánchez has wanted to visit the plenary hall.

Already in the Mayor's Office, Sanchez has signed in the Golden Book. His rubric and dedication to the Municipal Corporation and to the citizenship of the municipality, is the first of a President of the Government of the Nation that appears in it, since its creation in 1974 ;

since neither President Felipe González, who was in Cartagena in 1983 for the launching of the Mistral submarine and not José María Aznar, in 2002 to inaugurate the rehabilitation of the Sea Wall, visited the Town Hall;

while Rajoy's visit to the Consistorial Palace in 2009, he made it as head of the Opposition.

The mayor has given Pedro Sánchez as a souvenir of this visit a case with the cups and ingredients of the traditional Asian Cartagena and a kit of the Cartagena Basketball Club with his name, in response to his love of this sport.

Then he has moved to the Roman Amphitheater, where he has known the state of the excavations and recovery projects of this site located under the old bullring of the city and in which the Government of the Nation has committed to participate economically.

Both the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, as the municipal coordinator of Archeology and director of the excavations, Maricarmen Berrocal, have shown and explained to the President of the Government the progress and findings recorded in recent months and the heritage and historical importance of this monumental building of the Roman Cartagena
