Cartagena raises the curtain for World Theater Day (27/03/2019)

The Roman Theater of Cartagena has been the space chosen this Wednesday, March 27, to read the manifesto on the occasion of World Theater Day by the Murcian actor, Enrique Martínez, with the aim of raising awareness of the value of the performing arts for the citizenship.

The event was attended by the actor Enrique Martinez, the Councilor for Education, Mercedes García, the councilors of the municipal corporation, Pilar Marcos and Manuel Padín, and the president of the Performing Arts Platform, Lito Campillo.

The actor Enrique Martinez, known for his role as Quique in Los Hombres de Paco, has paraphrased a speech by Carlos Celdrán, theater director, playwright and Cuban professor, during the reading of his manifesto from which a fragment can be read below:

The tradition of theater is horizontal.

There is no one who can affirm that the theater is in some center of the world, in some city or privileged building.

The theater, as I have received it, is spread over an invisible geography that mixes the lives of those who do it and the theatrical craftsmanship in the same unifying gesture (...).

When I understood that the theater was a country in itself, a great territory that covers the entire world, a decision was born in me that is also a freedom: you do not have to move away from where you are, you do not have to run or move.

Where you exist is the public.

There are the comrades you need by your side.

There, outside your house, you have all the daily reality, opaque and impenetrable.

You work then from that apparent immobility to build the greatest of trips (...) Your journey is towards it, towards your heart, towards your subjectivity.

You travel inside of them, of their emotions, of their memories that you awaken and mobilize.

Your trip is vertiginous and nobody can measure it or silence it (...).

This same manifesto will be read by students of the Municipal School of Theater, at 6 pm, in the Icue, San Sebastian and Castellini squares, and at 7 pm, in the Plaza de San Francisco.

In addition, the Performing Arts Platform of Cartagena has organized, at 7:30 p.m., a round table with the Union of Actors of the Region of Murcia where Enrique Martinez himself will intervene.
