A participative cantata put the finishing touch to the Bach Cartagena program in the Church of Charity (22/03/2019)

The week Bach Cartagena, organized by the Department of Culture and the Early Music Projecty platform, had its closing on Thursday 21 at the Basilica of Charity with a spectacular concert around the music of two great masters of the Baroque: Bach and Buxtehude .

Singers of all ages joined their voices to those of the singing students of the higher conservatories of San Sebastian and Barcelona to celebrate the European Day of Ancient Music and the anniversary of the birth of JS Bach.

The University Orchestra of Murcia, directed by the promoter of the activities of Bach Cartagena, Jorge Losana, was in charge of accompanying the voices before a church full of public, among which there was no lack of Councilor for Culture of the City of Cartagena, David Martínez, and the Vice-Chancellor of Information and Communication Technologies of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Mathieu Kessler.

The singers of the choirs of IES Elcano, the Coral Iuvenis Music, the Choral Mass Tomás Luis de Victoria, the Coral Sauces, the Coral Argenum of La Unión and the University Choir of Murcia joined their voices with the singing students of the Superior School of Music of Catalonia and the Superior Center of Music of the Basque Country to interpret the music of Bach and Buxtehude, accompanied by the University Orchestra of Murcia and directed by Jorge Losana.

The objective of the event was to recreate the interpretation that was made of the cantatas in the Church of Santo Tomás de Leipzig in the time of Bach himself.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the orchestral parts and the choirs were played by professional musicians, the choir of the Thomas Kirche and soloists, while the choirs were performed by the whole assembly that attended the service on Sundays.

This fourth edition of Bach Cartagena has meant the consolidation of this initiative that unites our city to a group of European cities that celebrate the European Day of Ancient Music.

This event was held for the first time on March 21, 2013 under the patronage of UNESCO, the European Union and the artists Jordi Savall, Willian Christie, and René Jacob, at the proposal of the European Association of Ancient Music.

From then on, it is celebrated every March 21, coinciding with the beginning of spring and the anniversary of JS Bach, born this day in 1685.

Therefore, the Participatory Cantata has become one of the most important cultural events in the city.

With this concert the fourth edition of Bach Cartagena was closed, which continues to fill the streets of Cartagena every year with Baroque music.

This year institutions such as the Regional Assembly, the UPCT, the UMU, the ISEN Institute and the Youth Orchestra of Cartagena participated, which enjoyed a workshop with the Cartagena Víctor Martínez and offered a concert in the Hall of the City Council.

They interpreted the following program:
