SABIC consolidates its ongoing commitment to Social Responsibility by creating SABIC Spain Foundation (05/03/2019)

In 2019, the multinational will invest almost 36 million euros in management and maintenance projects in the industrial complex

The company announces the creation of the new SABIC Spain Foundation that will channel and promote the numerous Social Responsibility activities that it has been carrying out for more than 25 years in the Region

The General Director of SABIC, Juan Alemany, presented this morning the main achievements during 2018 in the industrial complex of La Aljorra and the projects and initiatives of this year 2019.

INVESTMENTS IN SUSTAINABILITY

In 2018, SABIC invested a total of 30 million euros in its industrial complex in La Aljorra, in addition to the more than 2,300 million euros already invested in it since the beginning of its management.

Of these, 22 million were destined to programmed shutdowns of the three production plants and, the other 8 remaining, to various improvement projects.

The most important technical stop was that of the polycarbonate plant, called LX1.

This stop, in addition to ensuring the integrity of the facilities and their proper functioning, improves their reliability, safety and energy efficiency of the equipment, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The use of water and energy are two crucial factors for the sustainable management of the industrial complex.

SABIC makes a great effort to improve its management and reduce consumption to reduce the environmental impact.

2017 was the best year in the history of SABIC Cartagena in water use (consumption compared to the production of the plant), 18% less than in 2010, the reference year.

In 2018, this ratio is maintained, which is expected to improve in 2019 to once again beat that record with various initiatives that are being implemented.

However, 2018 has been the best year in history in terms of energy use with a reduction of 14% compared to 2010. This has been achieved despite the general stop in LX1 (since at the stops energy is consumed, but it does not occur), which makes the achievement even more remarkable.

SECURITY

Occupational and environmental safety, an aspect that is always crucial for SABIC, has maintained an exemplary trajectory throughout the year, with no incidents of serious nature reported in any case.

This is especially significant given the size of the work carried out during the shutdown and the number of direct and indirect employees who made them with special machinery in some cases of large size.

JOB

In 2018, SABIC not only managed to maintain its level of stable employment and quality, but during that year its impact on employment in the Region was increased by the 1,000 employees of the contractor companies that collaborated in the extraordinary work of the stop.

The company's staff consists of more than 700 direct employees, one of the largest in the region, of which 45% are from the region of Cartagena.

CSR and COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY

2018 has been a year with an important activity of Social Responsibility and closeness to the nearby community always focused on 3 areas of action: environmental protection, health and well-being and education in technology and science.

As proof of SABIC's commitment to the community, it is important to highlight the consolidation of SABIC's Public Advisory Panel, made up of neighbors from nearby towns, which meets quarterly.

The Panel is a bidirectional dialogue table where representatives of the community can present their questions to the company and look for new bridges of understanding and collaboration that are beneficial for both parties.

The company has enabled in 2018 another direct channel of communication with neighbors through the Telegram application with which it warns them of activities of the complex that may cause them curiosity or interest so that they are always the first to know what is happening or affects them and which has received a high degree of acceptance.

SABIC FOUNDATION SPAIN

2019 will be even more important in this sense since it has just started with the creation of the SABIC Spain Foundation in order to channel and promote the large number of Social Responsibility activities that the company has been carrying out for more than 25 years.

The SABIC Foundation Spain is an entity of general interest and non-profit that advocates to meet the needs and priorities of communities near the industrial complex generating value in these populations in its three areas of action: environmental protection, health and welfare and education in technology and sciences in which you can develop projects, programs, collaborations, activities and educational, sports, environmental and socio-cultural activities of all kinds.

The Foundation was born with the aim of promoting and developing educational and socio-cultural programs, research and development of Industry and Technology, as well as protecting the environment and promoting healthy habits, developing educational activities , educational, cultural, recreational, sports, research and charitable activities.

BIG PROJECTS AND INTENDED INVESTMENT IN 2019 FOR THE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

The investment budget foreseen for this year 2019 will have a total of 36 million euros for management and maintenance projects of the plants.

These include programmed technical stops, preparation of the technical stop of the LX2 polycarbonate plant in 2020 and other strategic projects for the continuous improvement of the products manufactured in the Cartagena industrial complex.
