The Community opens an Intermediate Care Unit in Cartagena for children under 14 years (01/03/2019)

The project involves the hiring of twelve health specialists and an investment in adaptations and equipment of more than 140,000 euros

The Ministry of Health has launched today the Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit at the Santa Lucía University General Hospital, which will improve the continuity of the care offered to the infant patient of the Cartagena Health Area and their families, and avoid displacements .

As explained by the Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, "we are committed to the consolidation of a strong maternal and child block as has the Santa Lucia hospital, enabling the expansion of the techniques offered by the pediatric service and developing its portfolio of services."

This Intermediate Care Unit will receive income for patients from one month to 14 years who do not meet the criteria for admission to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but, explains the counselor, "require treatment, care and monitoring measures greater than those that can be given in conventional hospitalization plant. "

To this end, an independent section with capacity for four pediatric posts equipped with the necessary technology and continuous central monitoring by telemetry has been enabled in the Santa Lucía hospitalization unit and will have professional 24-hour surveillance.

Health has made an investment of 141,208 euros for adaptations and different equipment (a respirator, an ultrasound and a monitoring center) and its implementation has led to the recruitment of twelve health specialists to provide specialized, safe and efficient assistance.

Thus, adds the counselor, "techniques of the digestive and respiratory system that until now were performed in the operating room may be performed in the same hospitalization plant and with sedation, which is an undoubted improvement in care for the child and his family."

In addition, having qualified professionals and advanced equipment with physical support throughout the day will allow the treatment and follow-up of the patient with acute critical pathology "without having to be transferred to another referral center for it".

he pointed.

Finally, the Unit, in collaboration with the Pediatric Surgery Service, will contribute to improve post-surgical follow-up of patients with more complex pathology and advance the continuity of care for these patients.
