MC rejects the "contempt and apathy" of the Bishopric and the Socialist Government with the Cathedral of Cartagena (26/02/2019)

The City Council continues without executing the project for the recovery of the Chapel of the Council, included in the Participatory Budgeting, while from the religious organism it is affirmed that the Cartagena people only visit it "to wash the clothes"

This morning, the councilors of the municipal MC Group, led by their spokesman, José López, and the president of the formation, Jesús Giménez, visited the Cathedral of Cartagena, Santa María la Mayor, to learn first hand about their condition, within the days of opening to the public of, at least four days a month, that marks the Law of Cultural Heritage.

In this sense, the councilor and head of Heritage of MC, Ricardo Segado, has lamented that the bishopric, owner of the property, "sow lies and doubts among the public attending each visit through the tourist guide that makes them."

Thus, the mayor of Cartagena has said that, among other claims, "it has been said that Cartagena people who come to the Cathedral do so only to wash their clothes, as well as that they are the main and only culprits of the deterioration of the building."

For all this, Segado stressed that it is "an insult to all the citizens of Cartagena, who have been fighting for many years to restore and open to worship this temple, patrimonial and religious symbol of the city."

He also recalled that it is the only cathedral in Spain that remains in ruins "and whose owner does not spend a penny to remedy it."

Monthly visits forced by the Virgen de la Caridad Platform

On the other hand, Ricardo Segado has considered that, beyond the carelessness and apathy of the Bishopric, this issue has become "something more than political, in bad faith, only works to harm Cartagena."

In this regard, it should be remembered that it was the continued pressure of the Virgen de la Caridad Platform, which, with the support of the Mayor's Office of José López, forced the Bishopric to comply with the Regional Heritage Law so that it could open the building, as well as the preparation of a Master Plan.

Finally, the council has shown that within the Participatory Budgets of 2018 approved the proposal for the 'construction, restoration and adaptation of the Chapel of the Council in the Cathedral of Cartagena.

The project for the recovery of this chapel, whose owner is the City Council, continues to be stalled "because of socialist neglect of our heritage and our history."
