A thesis of the UPCT proposes to expand the sources of income and modernize the brotherhoods to conserve fishing communities (12/02/2019)

In the fishing communities of the Region of Murcia there is great concern about the future of this economic sector, as has been confirmed by the thesis at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) of Simón Hernández Aguado through the Chair Culture and Ethics Directive and Business (CEDE).

The researcher proposes to expand the sources of income and modernize the fraternities to facilitate the generational changeover.

Take advantage of the knowledge and experience of fishermen to move towards an adaptive management of fisheries, strengthen the union of fishermen and their interaction with other agents related to the sector, encourage innovation, provide resources to those who develop sustainable fishing techniques and promote Values of good governance are other of the recommendations that the thesis contributes to conserve and improve the socio-cultural and economic welfare of fishing communities.

"The vulnerability and stability of fishermen's income, as well as the rapid destruction of employment and fleet that has taken place in recent decades is the main concern of the sector", points out Hernández Aguado, whose thesis has been directed by the professors of the School of Business Sciences María Eugenia Sánchez Vidal and Ignacio Segado Segado.

"The levels of sustainability of livelihoods in San Pedro del Pinatar are greater than in the area of Cartagena, in which urgent measures are required to improve the state of their social and financial capital", highlights the researcher of the differences between the two fishing communities that he has analyzed.

"In addition, it is observed how the number of fishing techniques practiced in Cartagena is greater than in San Pedro del Pinatar.

This fact generates greater complexity when it comes to solving the problems that affect the fishing community and achieving the well-being of its members, "he adds.

The thesis has developed an innovative proposal of government using the theory of interactive governance and ethics applied to fishing.

The result is a theoretical framework based on three levels of government and an empirical study that analyzes the state of fishing communities as a first step to solve the problems that affect the sustainability of life projects based on fishing.

Finally, researchers advocate managing these challenges from a global and local perspective, adapting international and national fishing guidelines to the rules, norms and local culture of both communities.

Some of the conclusions of the thesis have been published in Marine Policy, a journal of international scientific reference in the field of fisheries management.
