The UPCT and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports join the celebration, today, of the Safe Internet Day (05/02/2019)

The UPCT, within the framework of the Erasmus Plus INDIe project, joins with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Region of Murcia to contribute, on Tuesday, February 5, to Safe Internet Day 2019, "Safer Internet Day" a event promoted by the INSAFE / INHOPE network with the support of the European Commission, which has been held since 2004, every February with the aim of promoting the safe and positive use of digital technologies, especially among children and young people.

Approximately 140 countries participate in the celebration, and in Spain, the Internet center Segura for Kids (IS4K) coordinates the actions.

The celebration of Safe Internet Day seeks to raise awareness about some of the challenges posed by the digital transformation of our ways of life.

Children and young people are surrounded by an increasing number of digital devices and new technologies and, in addition, from an earlier age.

It opens a world of possibilities, but it also carries risks.

In the European Union, for example, half of adolescents say they have already had one or several problems on the Internet.

On Safe Internet Day, parents, children, adolescents, teachers, educators, social workers, industries, decision-makers, politicians, etc. join with the mission of making the Internet a safe place where everyone can participate.

The Digital Content Production Center (CPCD) of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena has recorded a video starring the teacher of the UPCT, María Dolores Cano and the girl Rocío Pérez, sixth grade student of the Atalayas School in Cartagena.

In it, they review five basic rules that help to enjoy the Internet more safely.

Professor Cano is a PhD in Telecommunications Engineering, and teaches the subject Network Security at the School of Telecommunications Engineering.

The Atalaya School has recently been named Teacher Training School within the Innovation Community presented by the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Adela Martínez-Cacha earlier this year.

The Ministry will disseminate the video among all the schools in the Region on February 5, to contribute to the awareness of children, parents and teachers.

The action is born from the Eramus Plus INDIe project, led by the UPCT, where the General Directorate of Attention to Diversity and Educational Quality of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, together with institutes, schools and educational authorities of the Region, participates. Lithuania and Greece.

This project seeks to promote the formation of open educational material online, by offering teachers a tool to become authors of interactive learning units, which they can share with other teachers in a shared and open INDIeOpen repository.

Part of the generated materials will be applied to citizens' digital competences, defined in the European Digital Competencies Framework for the promotion of the Digital Single Market.

In this context, Professor Cano will develop transversal learning units on Internet security, which can be reused freely in their classes by any teacher or educator.
