The Cartagena Firefighters receive training to open doors in case of emergency (31/01/2019)

Currently, there are increasing cases in which more and more people, usually older, stay locked up or suffer accidents while they are alone, with the key thrown inside.

Until Friday, February 1, a workshop on techniques for opening door locks in case of emergency is being carried out at the School of Public Safety of the City of Cartagena.

A team of firefighters from Ávila is teaching these classes to members of the Cartagena fire department.

Thanks to these workshops, firefighters can access the premises in a simpler way, avoiding damages to the owners of the houses.

The councilman of the Area of Public Safety of the City of Cartagena, Manuel Mora, who has visited the participants of this course, said that "with this training, firefighters will acquire the necessary knowledge to access housing in an emergency situation of an effective way and that is less expensive for the tenant ".

A total of 15 firefighters from Cartagena are receiving these classes, divided into three groups of five officers each, with a tutor for each one.

They are receiving tools and practical training to be able to open doors without breaking them.

The corporal of firemen of the City council of Ávila, Óscar Sáez, that in addition is monitor of this workshop, says that "the doors every time are more complicated to open.

They are armored, in some cases armored.

We need to use techniques to open those types of doors. "

The techniques taught in this course, which is now 11 years old, are the result of many years of experience.

It is a training that the monitors have supplemented with firefighters from all over Spain.

The firefighter Óscar Sáez assures that it is a pleasant course, in which 80% of the knowledge is practical.

"It's fun, because it allows you to work with the opening tools."

The tools they use are diverse: blow extractors, bell extractors, specific extraction screws for openings and even a digital application to identify locks and open them, only for use by emergency personnel.

"By means of a tablet or a mobile, it teaches you guidelines to open a lock.

By means of a photograph or video, it allows you to recognize the lock that is there and its intervention protocol ".

The course lasts until Friday, February 1.

The firefighters who have come from the City of Ávila are very happy with their visit to Cartagena.

"We are delighted to come, especially because of the temperature," says firefighter Óscar Sáez.

With this training action, the fire department of the City of Cartagena aims to respond to a problem increasingly common in many homes.
