MC: The lack of tourism policy hampers the growth of the sector in Cartagena and its district (26/01/2019)

José López denounces that the Autonomous Community and City Council "with many photos and little background" cover their lack of ideas that has dragged on for four decades.

The Cartagena spokesman recalls that the brand "Costa de Cartagena" and the transfer of the Ministry of Tourism are measures promoted by MC, the latter since 2003.

This weekend ends at the Madrid FITUR 2019 fairground, the international tourism fair in which since last Wednesday the regional and municipal governments have presented their initiatives for this exercise and competed to demonstrate who promotes more the municipality of Cartagena.

The municipal spokesman and General Secretary of MC Jose Lopez values that "drag four decades" this lack of tourism policy with "many photos -and- little fund", while regrets that administrations are "unable to generate added value."

The 2018 data show that in the CARM tourism activity is still below in its contribution to the economy, it has accounted for 11% of regional GDP compared to 11.8% national, a percentage that is even higher in the entire Mediterranean area .

For the Cartagena leader this weakness of the regional tourism sector is demonstrated in that "this Region has the cheapest hotel beds, a lower percentage of foreign tourists and a daily cost per tourist of around 60% of the national average".

For López, the consequences of this lack of planning "especially suffer from Cartagena and its region", whose potential make it "the destination with the greatest margin of progress in the Mediterranean" with "a privileged climate, heritage and natural environment" that does not receives deserved attention, which hinders the growth of the sector.

Also the mayor of MC recalls that the region of Cartagena "is the regional reference in tourism," because "here are 58% of hotel beds and in 2018 the tourism activity produced more than 1,200 million euros of income."

'Costa de Cartagena' at FITUR

The MC spokesman is pleased that "the only novelty is the promotion of the 'Costa de Cartagena', a brand whose creation and momentum MC coordinated with the sector last year for its presentation at FITUR" whose need, he explains, comes from "the systematic concealment of our region and the nonsense of the regional policy of tourism promotion".

In relation to the criticisms leveled against the promotion of the coast of Cartagena by Noelia Arroyo (PP), Lopez states that "those who criticize it have spent years saving furniture in tourism 'at the expense of Cartagena' and are responsible for the examples of tourist malpractice that are studied in universities like 'Murcia Turística' and 'Murcia No Typical' ".

Announcement of the inclusion in the electoral program of the PP of the transfer to Cartagena of the Ministry of Tourism

On the commitment to the transfer of the Ministry of Tourism to Cartagena the general secretary of MC celebrates that "this week the PP has also agreed that Cartagena is the capital of the Costa Calida."

And he considers that it is "a necessary initiative, which MC introduced in its 2003 program, and which 16 years later everyone assumes".

López, convinced that it is an electoralist announcement, encourages the PP to "continue" and asks that they commit the transfer to Cartagena of the Ministries of Culture and Industry.

The Cartagena leader concludes that "if the transfer of tourism counseling does not involve the installation of the Tourism Qualification Center (CCT) in Cartagena (so many times promised) and the Tourism Institute (ITREM) where decisions are actually made and decide the investments, it will not do any good for us to put up a poster and some flags.
