Social Services reinforces the attention to the homeless due to the lowering of temperatures (09/01/2019)

The City of Cartagena, through the Department of Social Services, Civil Protection and the Local Police, will reinforce actions and measures to protect the homeless, in the coming days, in anticipation of a significant decline in temperatures, as announced by the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García.

To carry out these measures, the consistory has the collaboration and coordination of social entities that work in the care of these people, such as Accem, Red Cross, Caritas, Santa Teresa Hospitality Foundation and CEA-La Huertecica.

García has pointed out that the City Council has been working with them throughout the year, in the care and prevention of the situations of the so-called "homelessness".

Specifically, during the winter period, through the so-called Cold Wave Campaign, which facilitates access to shelters for the homeless and bystanders and also for people who are in a particularly vulnerable situation. .

Likewise, they are supported and accompanied in the management of grants and procedures that facilitate access to another accommodation different from the one they have, according to each problem.

The measures that will be adopted in the face of falling temperatures are a reinforcement of those that are developed on a regular basis and are intended to ensure full attention to people who may be in the street or in poor living conditions.

For this, the different entities will reinforce their night trips, provide blankets and basic kit and insist that the affected people move to the accommodation centers.

The police officers and the Social Services technicians will directly attend, in the shortest time possible, the different emergencies detected with the collaboration and support of all the professionals.

Likewise, a nightly departure is planned, jointly with the entities and transfer of people to the accommodations, when necessary.

The Councilor for Social Services has also pointed out that although today there have been contacts to adopt measures, tomorrow will be a meeting with the technicians of the Homeless Program belonging to the City Council and social entities.

Finally, Mercedes García has requested citizen collaboration, so that in the case of having knowledge of any risk situation, they inform the Local Police.
