The UPCT develops a clothes dryer by microwave 80% faster and lower consumption (26/12/2018)

The research group in Electromagnetism and Matter of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) is designing an optimized model of microwave clothes dryer with high energy efficiency that can reduce drying time and electricity consumption by 80%.

"We estimate, according to the studies and publications made by our group that drying times of between 7 and 8 minutes will be achieved compared to the approximately 75 minutes that current appliances take," advances Juan Luis Pedreño, researcher responsible for this project. that has a grant of the call 'Proof of concept' within the Regional Program of Support for the Transfer and Valorisation of Knowledge of the Seneca Foundation.

"The advantages of microwave technology over traditional technologies are evident, but there is still no valid solution to bring these techniques to the large domestic consumer market," adds Pedreño.

"The generation of R + D + i for the development of this solution should allow that in a relatively short period of time, manufacturers assume this new technology, allowing the emergence of a real change in the paradigm of clothing drying technologies , through the use of microwaves, as happened in their day with domestic microwave ovens, "argues the professor of the School of Telecommunications of the UPCT.

"The main innovation that this project has to produce is focused on efficiency and energy saving on a large scale", concludes the researcher at the Polytechnic.
