The Hydrographic Confederation authorizes the opening of 164 drought wells in the Campo de Cartagena (27/11/2018)

The Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura has authorized Tuesday the opening of 164 private drought wells located in the Campo de Cartagena, after a meeting attended by the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, the government delegate, Diego Conesa , the president of the CHS, Mario Urrea, and the president of the Community of Irrigators of Cartagena, Manuel Martínez.

Thanks to this agreement, the farmers of the Cartagena field will be able to extract a maximum of 9.3 cubic hectometres of water per year that will be destined to an irrigation surface of 2,980 hectares within the irrigable zone, which means that it does not involve the creation of new irrigated areas.

The 164 wells that are going to reopen are those that have the favorable Declaration of Environmental Impact, in fact, the authorization for another 88 wells has been denied because they did not meet the environmental conditions and its opening would have caused a damage to the Hydraulic Public Domain (DPH).

It is worth remembering that last August the mayor made a commitment with the representatives of the agricultural sector of the Cartagena field to transfer to the CHS its request to reopen these drought wells.

"This is a claim that our farmers had pending since 2013, so for me it is a satisfaction that, in just 5 months, a need that has been blocked for the last 5 years has been resolved.

The role of the Delegation of Government has been vital to streamline the procedures that have made this authorization possible, "said the mayor.

The permit that has been granted this morning is provisional and has a term of one year during which users can obtain a definitive authorization to continue extracting flows from the aquifer, provided that they meet the following requirements: the mixture of the extracted flows With other resources with less salinity to avoid affectations to the DPH, the probes must have installed volumetric counters and pass chemical quality controls.
