The Refuge Museum houses an exhibition on the scientific advances and the Spanish health heroes of the Civil War (09/11/2018)

"Medicine in Time of War" is the new exhibition proposal of Cartagena Port of Cultures, which shows the great scientific advances that emerged in times of war;

and recognizes the work of women and men who became heroes through ingenuity and dedication, saving thousands of lives in times of war.

The exhibition can be visited at the Refugio de la Guerra Civil Museum from Tuesday to Saturday at 11, 13 and 16 hours, and the price of admission is 3.50 euros and free for members of the Club Cartagena Puerto de Culturas.

The act of presentation was attended by the Councilor for Culture and Equality, David Martínez Noguera;

who has been accompanied by the Director of the Military Historical Museum, Juan Antonio Martínez;

the owner of Farmacia Sánchez Carrascosa, Ascensión Sánchez;

and the coordinator of the Faculty of Nursing of the UCAM in Cartagena, Maleni Gómez.

The councilor has indicated that this exhibition will house excellent pieces, which will show visitors the great scientific advances that were made during the 1936-1939 conflict and that were taken as a model in World War II.

He also indicated that the Spanish health heroes will be known, who sharpened their ingenuity by creating new methods to save lives, although they will also address issues such as how science was applied to annihilate the population.

The exhibition also has pieces donated by the Military Historical Museum of Cartagena, among which can be found first aid kits, hemostasis and probing equipment, wound treatments, pharmaceutical products, as well as medical instruments, which complete up to thirty pieces that are part of the medical advances section.

The exhibition highlights a score of gas masks from the countries that supplied weapons to the national side and the Republican side.

This section will explain the continuing threat of applying weapons of mass destruction and how this affected European countries.

The woman in the front is another outstanding aspect in the sanitary aid, in the periods of war.

His incorporation and contribution was decisive in the organization and care of the sick.

Martinez has pointed out that to explain the contribution of women in the front, which transcends countries and borders is the figure of Marie Curie, with its discovery of radio and polonium, the contribution of mobile radiography on the battlefield and the application of their research in the treatment of cancer.

To represent this space, the laboratory of the Polish scientist has been recreated, the first person to receive two Nobel prizes in different specialties in physics and chemistry.

She became the director of the Radiology Service of the French Red Cross and created France's first military radiology center, operational at the end of 1914.

For its part, Ascensión Sánchez, owner of Farmacia Sánchez Carrascosa, has donated items such as laboratory scales, monocular microscopes, flasks, funnels, test tubes, instruments to enhance pills, mortars and jars with chemicals labeled 1930.

Within this block dedicated to women in the front, the formation of the nursing staff as a professional group in armed conflicts will be highlighted.

It will be explained how nurses and ladies nurses marked a turning point in the field of nursing by regulating their studies and training, creating large organizations to save thousands of wounded.

To this end, a series of historical uniforms of nurses has been exhibited, given by the Official College of Nursing of the Region of Murcia and the Catholic University of Murcia.

Likewise, "Medicine in Time of War" will be surrounded by an extensive program of activities organized for these last months of the year.
