The District of Cartagena registers the lowest increase in unemployment in October of the last decade (05/11/2018)

The District of Cartagena recorded the least increase in unemployment relative to the month of October of the last ten years, according to the 'Monthly Report of the Labor Market of the Region of Cartagena', prepared by the Economic Studies Department of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, with the collaboration of the Regional Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena.

COEC cautiously assesses this increase of 2.5% in the figures for registered unemployment in the region of Cartagena during the month of October, compared to a smaller increase experienced in the Region of Murcia (1.34%).

Only, the municipality of Torre Pacheco (-5%) shows a decrease in unemployment figures during the month of October, next to the municipality of Fuente Álamo, which kept the number of unemployed stable.

In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment in the region decreased by 226 people in October 2018 compared to September 2018, which represents a drop of 0.8%.

This decrease confirms that the increase in the number of registered unemployed is mainly due to seasonal effects.

Pedro Pablo Hernández has stated that "despite maintaining a positive trend in the inter-annual figures and being the least bad October of the last ten years, we are concerned about the political uncertainty, in the medium and long term, and how it can affect the current regulation. fiscal and labor ".

The president of COEC has insisted on the need to speed up investments in the large infrastructures needed by the Comarca of Cartagena (AVE, Mediterranean Corridor, ZAL, El Gorguel, etc.) as an element to break the seasonality of the labor market, subject to to a great dependence on the summer and Christmas season.

Equally, the enhancement of these infrastructures will bring about a significant increase in business investments to benefit from this improvement in logistics and communications.

The total number of unemployed in the region of Cartagena in October 2018 was 28,711 people.

This means an increase of 697 unemployed with respect to the month of September (see table 2), 2.5% more.

Unemployment rose especially in the services sector (4.0% more than in September) and in industry (+ 3.2%), decreasing only in construction (-5.2%).

By municipalities, the number of unemployed increased in almost all the municipalities of the region of Cartagena.

The only exceptions were in Torre Pacheco, where the number of unemployed fell by 5.0%, and in Fuente Álamo, where it remained stable.

The largest percentage increases in the number of unemployed in October occurred in Los Alcázares (+ 7.6%), San Pedro del Pinatar (+ 5.2%), San Javier (+ 5.0%) and La Unión (+ 4.0%).

By sex and age, unemployment increased among women (+ 8.4% in children under 25 years of age, + 4.7% between 25 and 44 years old and + 3.6% in people over 44 years of age).

Unemployment among men under 25 years of age also increased (+ 4.0%).

By contrast, unemployment fell slightly among men aged 25 to 44 years (-0.3%) and somewhat more in those over 44 (-1.6%).

The increase in the number of unemployed women is not surprising given that the only sector in which unemployment decreased is that of construction, a sector that has traditionally been nourished by male employment.

To put these variations of unemployment in context in October, the percentage increase in unemployment recorded during this month in the region was lower than that experienced in October 2017 and the average of the months of October of the last 10 years.

Therefore, at the county level, this month of October has been less negative than what are usually the months of October in terms of increases in unemployment.

At the municipal level Los Alcázares stands out negatively, where the month of October 2018 is worse than that of 2017 and the average of the months of October of the last ten years.

In San Javier unemployment increased, but less than it usually does in the month of October.

In Cartagena, Mazarrón, and San Pedro del Pinatar, the month of October 2018 was worse than that of 2017 but better than the average of the months of October of the last ten years.

Finally, in Torre Pacheco, unemployment decreased in a month that has traditionally been negative for employment in the municipality.
