The Roman Theater of Cartagena inaugurates the exhibition'Lugares del olvido' (26/10/2018)

The Roman Theater of Cartagena, whose patronage is integrated by the Community, the City of Cartagena and the Cajamurcia Foundation, inaugurates today (8:00 pm) the exhibition 'Places of Forgetfulness', by the Valencian artist Antonio Gómez Ribelles.

This exhibition project talks about spaces and objects that, at some point, fell into oblivion and are now recovered.

The use of old photography joins the current photograph of the artist's travels through archaeological sites and museums, his own images on which he paints and draws.

Gómez Ribelles rescues for example from his childhood the memory of his first visit to the Greco-Roman city of Ampurias, and in his series 'Lugares' he turns those forgotten fragments into stories of a story.

It also shows the footprint of man in the landscape, almost innocent, with the image of the canal that carried the water to the Roman city of Segóbriga or the view of the stands of the Roman theater in Cartagena, a building full of identity where they are perceived the traces of its long history.

Here the layers and glazes overlap as strata and are witnesses of time.

In the series 'Objects' the fragments that belonged to the place, to its people and to a time, a puzzle where parts are missing sometimes take center stage.

Ribelles recovers his family memory in the series 'Tiempo', where the family album is the source of inspiration that allows him to reconstruct a story filtered by feelings.

A story that is enriched by the memories and the postcards, which invite to the trip, to the reunion with the history.

Antonio Gómez Ribelles, who defines himself as a multidisciplinary artist (painter, photographer, poet and writer), has also left his notebook in the form of 'wax tablets', evoking the classical world where they were used as portable and reusable writing support. .

To his life experience, the journey, the place and the time, the investigation is added, creating an exhibition project where the artist has experienced a symbiosis with the places, has breathed the air of the lost places, has dived in the libraries and books and, through the creative process, he has reconnected with the past.

'Places of Forgetfulness' can be visited until next January 14 at the Museum of the Roman Theater in Cartagena, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. .
