The year of discovery "will look back to remember the revolts of 92 in Cartagena (23/10/2018)

Cartagena will look back to remember the revolts by the closure of the shipyards, in 1992, with the film 'The Year of Discovery'.

From November 9 to 18, Luis López Carrasco will shoot in the city this feature film that intertwines the genres of documentary and fiction.

The presentation of this film project has been made, this Tuesday, October 23, the Councilor for Culture, David Martinez and the director of the film, Luis Lopez.

The mayor of Culture has begun the presentation highlighting that Cartagena is becoming in recent months a "great film set", since there are many producers who are interested in shooting in the city.

But this project "is special," as Martinez pointed out, "because it is a feature film about the recent history of the city."

The film will be recorded in November and the genres of documentary and fiction will be intertwined, "having the industrial crisis that Cartagena experienced in the early 90s as a backdrop," said Martinez.

For his part, the director of the film, Luis López, has pointed out that they have been documented for years, interviewing and investigating in Cartagena before the filming of the film began.

The filmmaker also thanked the institutional support received from the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Spain and the municipalities of Cartagena and La Union, as well as the collaboration of neighborhood associations.

López also counted on the cooperation of Raul Liarte, son of a Navantia worker, co-writer of the film;

and of José Ibarra, a former worker of Navantia, historian and writer of the book 'Cartagena en llamas', which narrates the revolts in Cartagena, the police charges that ended with multiple injuries and the burning of the parliament of the Regional Assembly.

The director has emphasized the 3 years they have been working on the project because "it is important to deepen as much as possible in the different realities that the city lived in the early 90s."

López faces 'The Year of Discovery' after his first feature film, 'The Future', in which he contributed a new vision of the Spanish transition.

With the same critical vision will shoot his new film set in the year 92, for many a glorious year in him that in Spain were held the Olympic Games and the Universal Exposition of Seville (the Expo92), but he also suffered a great industrial crisis.

The director has remembered how he lived that year.

"I like Murcia, and with my grandparents who lived in Cartagena, I can not forget the day when I turned 11 on television and suddenly saw the smoke of a Parliament that had been attacked by the workers."

"An image that can give us an idea of the contradictions that Spanish society can have".

For the filmmaker that year is remembered in partial terms.

'The Year of Discovery' will happen the weekend before the altercations.

The action will be placed in a bar of the 'Lago', using 50 citizens of Cartagena who lived that time, along with new generations who will narrate their memories, thus creating a choral portrait.

Only 5 of the protagonists will be professional actors, a fact that López justifies in the type of work he does "I want to look for naturalism, rolling a document that includes fragments of life".

The team of the film will shoot between 9 and 18 November in the outskirts of Santa Lucía neighborhood, streets of the old town and inside the bar 'La Tana', located in the Plaza de 'El Lago'.
