«Investment in Industry 4.0 needs planning», warns a Brazilian researcher at the Polytechnic (28/09/2018)

The electrical engineer and expert in executive education George Leal Jamil has given a lecture on Thursday at the School of Business Sciences of the UPCT in which he pointed out that it is necessary "a symbiosis between engineers and managers" to plan the technological transition towards Industry 4.0, as argued by the Brazilian researcher.

"The technology requires planning," insisted the Latin American expert, who is doing a postdoctoral stay at the UPCT and is collaborating with the Entrepreneurship Office of the Polytechnic.

"In previous technological waves, a lot of money has been squandered when investing in new processes without knowing their returns or the security of the data," he has exemplified.

Jamil observes in the companies of the Region of Murcia "a lot of motivation, but also a lot of concern because the risks of change are very great" in the face of the new industrial revolution.

The fears are motivated by the "high investment that is needed" and by the possible loss of jobs.

"The organization of work is going to change radically," he says.

The companies that have already moved towards the 4.0 industry have "increased their productivity and operational efficiency", he assures, reducing their volumes of employment.

"They gain flexibility to open new production lines, enter new markets and get new customers, but can lose control if they do not conduct market studies," he warns.

"They can launch products that compete against their own offer or for which there is no space," he says.

The lecture, organized by Professor Antonio Juan Briones, was attended by students from the Strategic Management course of the third year of Administration and Business Management (ADE) at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.
