The City Council launches a campaign to facilitate recycling in beach bars and associations (03/08/2018)

The City of Cartagena and Ecoembes have launched a new campaign to facilitate and encourage recycling also in summer.

Specifically, this initiative was patent last week, with the delivery by the councilor of Municipal Services, Juan Pedro Torralba, and responsible for Ecoembes in the area, Juan Carlos Arranz, yellow containers in several bars of the municipality.

"This City Council has a very important commitment to sustainability and our goal is to continue moving forward to raise awareness among citizens of the importance of recycling for our future and that of our environment," said the mayor.

Citizen collaboration is essential to increase recycling rates and, consequently, the amount of secondary raw materials (extracted from waste) ready to be part of new products.

Therefore, and to facilitate the separation of waste among citizens, the City of Cartagena, in collaboration with Ecoembes, will provide yellow buckets of 120 liters to 50 beach bars during this summer.

In this way, the owners of 50 bars in the municipality, will have their own yellow bucket to deposit light packaging waste generated in their establishment.

The City Council will also distribute 500 yellow bins and 500 blue waste bins among neighborhood associations, women's associations and the elderly, in order to encourage selective collection outside the home.

With this increase in containerization, the aim is to bring and multiply the collection points to the citizens, facilitating the separation of waste and increasing the environmental benefits that this entails.

It must be remembered that separating waste provides material resources for the development of new products.

Recycling in Cartagena

During 2017, a total of 2,401 tons of packaging waste from the yellow container (plastic containers, bricks and cans) and 2,554 tons of the blue container (paper and cardboard) were recycled in Cartagena.

This was possible thanks to the 2,270 containers, between blue and yellow, distributed throughout the municipality.

Being more concrete, each inhabitant of Cartagena deposited last year 11.2 kilograms of waste cans, briks and plastic containers in yellow containers and 11.9 kilos of waste paper and cardboard in blue containers.

About Ecoembes

Ecoembes (www.ecoembes.com) is the non-profit environmental organization that promotes the circular economy through the recycling of packaging.

In 2017, more than 1.4 million tons of light packaging and cardboard and paper containers were recycled throughout the national territory, reaching a recycling rate of 77.1%.

Thanks to this percentage, numerous environmental benefits were obtained, such as avoiding the emission of 1.2 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere or saving 5.8 million MWh.

Likewise, 20.15 million cubic meters of water were saved.
