José López demands the president of the European Cyclists Federation to avoid the discrimination devised by the CARM to exclude Cartagena from 'EuroVelo' (16/07/2018)

Today, the spokesman of the Municipal Group MC Cartagena, José López, has informed the communication made, by letter, to the president of the European Cyclists Federation, Christophe Najdovski, to explain the arbitrary decision of the CARM Government to exclude Cartagena and to the rest of the coastal municipalities of the Comarca of the natural course of the eighth route 'EuroVelo'.

In particular, the route that should cross Cartagena, the 'Mediterranean Route', is integrated into the long-distance network 'EuroVelo'.

It comprises from Cádiz to Atenas (almost 5,900 kilometers).

The will of the Executive of Lopez Miras to discriminate against Cartagena is to skip the natural course of the sea that gives name to the route, a circumstance that would be limited only to the section that affects our Region.

In this context, López has addressed the driving group of 'EuroVelo' to denounce "the design chosen for the eighth route, which avoids the city of Cartagena and its area, in favor of other cities that are not on the coast."

Then, the Cartagena leader explains to Najdovski the peculiarities of the Campo de Cartagena and the attraction that the Mar Menor adds to the route, in addition to highlighting the key role the Comarca plays in the regional economy, thanks to the combination of tourism and industry.

In his letter, José López reviews the intention of the regional and state government to "minimize, for forty years, the possibilities of the region of Cartagena, denying us the necessary infrastructure, and limiting our development for the benefit of the city of Murcia."

He has listed some of the most significant facts of "an overwhelming policy against Cartagena, for example, with the deviation of the Mediterranean Corridor, the absence of high speed, the transfer of the logistics activities area of the Port to fifty kilometers, or the closure of the Campo de Cartagena airport and the opening of one in the municipality of Murcia ".

Subsequently, the MC spokesman has notified that "the greatest evidence of this policy is the progressive decrease in the population rate in the Campo de Cartagena during the last decade".

For all the above, Lopez has requested the help of the European Federation of Cyclists to "define the natural corridor and remedy the incomprehensible decision of those who have acted under political criteria and without taking into account the proximity to the Mar Menor. zone of influence passes one of the most important hiking routes in Spain, the GR-92, which surrounds the salt lake ".

It has ended warning that "if the Federation does not take into account this request they will be jointly responsible for a new case of discrimination against the Campo de Cartagena and its tourism, directly affecting the users of 'EuroVelo', for preventing them from enjoying a beautiful coastal area and a privileged natural enclave ".

'EuroVelo'

The 'EuroVelo' network is an ambitious initiative promoted by the European Cyclists' Federation that structures a total of 15 routes that cross the European continent and that offer beauty, tourism, tranquility and safety to cyclists who enjoy these routes.

An important tourist element if we take into consideration the data issued by this Federation.

A study commissioned in 2012 by the European Parliament figures on a total of 2,300 million trips made by cyclists within Europe.

More than 44,000 million euros per year generate this activity.

For example, stays made on bicycle trips cause an annual impact of more than 9,000 million euros.
