Fish with Art launches its nets to the coast of Cabo de Palos with activities for the whole family (10/07/2018)

On July 17, lovers of the marine environment and fish have an appointment in the fishing village of Cabo de Palos, after the hangover of the traditional sea procession that is celebrated every year in honor of the patron saint of fishermen, the Virgin of the Carmen.

On this occasion, Fish with Art, an initiative in which the City of Cartagena collaborates, proposes two parallel activities so that the whole family can enjoy and learn about marine biodiversity and artisanal fishing:

Gastronomic workshop for adults Fish on the plate, in which the participants will learn how to cook Bacorera stew in casserole in the hands of chef Fran Trigo Oliva.

Little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus) is a species of the tuna family that is easily recognized by the pints or specks it has on its abdomen and because its mouth is larger than that of the melva.

The little tunny -which feeds mainly on sardines, sardines, anchovies, cephalopods and crustaceans- has its optimum season of consumption in the months of May, June and July and is captured with artisanal fishing gear such as tuna, tuna and morunas.

The workshop -directed to people over 16 years old- will take place at the Chiringuito Verano Azul (Cala Fría - Cabo de Palos - next to the lighthouse).

Crafts workshop for children Small beach modeling workshop, in which the little ones will learn about the marine biodiversity of Cabo de Palos preparing different molds of marine organisms with modeling paste.

The workshop -directed to children between 5 and 12 years old- will take place on the beach and will be directed by the Association for the Protection of Cabo de Palos.

The two activities will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and are free, but require prior registration by writing an email before July 16 to pesca@columbares.org, indicating the activity in which you want to participate and the following data: name and surname, age, email and contact number of each participant.

Pescados con Arte is an initiative of the Columbares Association and the Association of Artisanal Fishermen of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park (PESCARTES) to make known to the public the social, environmental, cultural and gastronomic value of the fishing captured in a craft on the Murcian-Almeria coast and promote the consumption of sustainable seafood.

Simultaneously, Pescados con arte wants to highlight the marine reserves of fishing interest as the most effective management tools for the regeneration of fishing resources and the conservation of marine biodiversity, focusing efforts on the marine reserves of Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas, Cabo Tiñoso and Cabo de Gata-Níjar and Natura 2000 network areas of the project scope.

The Fish with Art project has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, through the High-seas Program of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, in collaboration with the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation.

In addition, the project has the support of the University of Murcia, the Amureco Association and Fornet.

For the activities organized this month in Cabo de Palos, the project has the collaboration of the City of Cartagena, the Chiringuito Verano Azul owned by Nuevas Bodegas Bernal and the Association for the Protection of Cabo de Palos (Procabo).
