A student of the UPCT proposes to implant in La Manga a public system of loan of bicycles (05/07/2018)

Pacify traffic and avoid collapses, reduce the emission of polluting gases, improve the quality of life, provide sports and recreational activities and save on travel are the advantages that would imply the implementation of a public bicycle loan service in La Manga, as proposes the student of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Tamara Hernández Pagán in his Final Degree Project (TFG) in Business Administration and Management (ADE).

The student has conducted an online survey of a hundred permanent and summer residents and occasional visitors to find out their opinion about the project and 77% were in favor of the implementation of this system.

The rest of the sample opposed considering it dangerous (18%), or considering that the conditions are bad (2%) or because they already have a bicycle (2%.)

The high degree of support for the proposal stands out especially considering that 40% of respondents have not used a bicycle for more than a year, which suggests that many would start pedaling if the service is implemented.

La alumna highlights in her work, directed by Fernando López, that La Manga's bike lanes network provides safety to the users of these vehicles.

Respondents also show their preference for annual tickets to rent bicycles.

Tamara Hernández, who is a user of the public bicycle service in Lisbon, where she works for Bosch since before finishing her degree, discovered the advantages of these systems during her Erasmus stays in Poland.

"There it is used a lot and for years I thought that it would work very well in the environment of the Mar Menor, where there is no unevenness", explains the student.

"When I was vacationing at Playa Honda, I used to ride a bicycle, until it was stolen," recalls the student, who points out in her work that the first bicycle loan services that were introduced in the world also suffered vandalism problems such as the one she faces. today the Murcia.

Despite this, 56 Spanish municipalities now have public bicycle systems and their expansion is increasing worldwide.

"In any modern city, the integration of infrastructures that give coverage to the use of a public bicycle system should be mandatory," affirms the one already graduated from the Faculty of Business Sciences.

"After the robbery I opted to buy a folding bike, to keep it at home, but we only have one and with a public system we could enjoy the whole family going for a walk in La Manga, a route that I love", concludes the graduate in Administration and Business management.
