The Primary Care teams of Cartagena have just joined the Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Early Childhood Program (Purapi), developed by the Ministry of Health and the Murcian Health Service.
Previously, the pilot phase of the program was carried out in three health centers, including Barrio Peral de Cartagena, where antimicrobial use in children under 3 years has declined.
The prescription of antibiotics in these health centers was in 2016 (analysis prior to the start of the program) in 17.81 daily doses per thousand inhabitants in Cartagena, 32.59 in the Lorca Sur health center and 8.44 in the Yecla.
After one year of intervention, antibiotic consumption rates were reduced by 3.3 points in the center of Cartagena, 8.21 in Lorca and 0.14 points in Yecla.
After the analysis of data showing a reduction of up to eight points in the consumption of antimicrobials in children under three years, the Ministry of Health has begun extending the program to all areas of Health of the Autonomous Community.
The rate of antibiotic consumption in Spain is one of the highest in Europe, which leads to a high percentage of resistant bacterial strains.
In children under 3 years of age, the majority of infections are of viral origin, however it is the age group with the highest antibiotic consumption, and it is estimated that about 50 percent of the antimicrobial prescriptions made in this age group they would be of little or no therapeutic value.
Yesterday institutional representatives met at the Santa María del Rosell hospital, the Working Group on Responsible Use of Antibiotics, pediatricians, nurses and pharmacists from the health centers and pharmacies of the health area began the implementation of the Purapi Program, thus adding to the goal of achieving an improvement in the prescription of antibiotics in this age group.
