Citizens warned of the inaction of the City Council to address the contamination in the landfill of El Gorguel (09/06/2018)

- "Although we know that direct responsibility is held by those who governed when these anomalies occurred, the PP, and those who occupied the local executive when the report arrived, the MC party, is the current local government (PSOE) which has that has to take the reins of this subject, to offer all the explanations and to learn of the happened thing to establish the preventive protocols ", has explained the orange spokesman, Manuel Padín

The Municipal Group of Citizens recriminates the Government of Cartagena that more than a year and a half after a report of the UPCT required urgent measures for the regeneration of the land of the old landfill of El Gorguel due to the high risk of pollution and eutrophication for the environment and groundwater has done nothing to solve this problem which is "very serious and of its competence".

According to part of the UPCT study, it is suspected that contaminated material from tailings or waste from a fertilizer factory was used to fill sealing areas of the landfill.

The orange training spokesman in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, raised several questions at the last ordinary plenary session regarding pollution in the landfill and the Government, after blaming MC for the lack of reaction when he governed, the mayor Juan Pedro Torralba responded that the report of the UPCT had been transferred to Lhicarsa and that they were waiting for the company to present a plan to solve the situation;

a response that contrasts with the one he gave a month ago when he said that the City Council would commission a report to the Polytechnic University or an external company, where it would have to detail the scope and characteristics of the waste, identify and delimit the area of affected land, and the effects it has for the environment.

He also assured, but did not make any mention at the last Plenary, which would bring this matter to the General Directorate of the Environment of the Autonomous Community.

According to Manuel Padín, "the City Council can not wipe its hands with this matter, react only when we take the colors out of the Plenary and allow 18 months to pass without moving a finger: the UPCT report has shown that the directives are being violated European countries that protect the quality of groundwater and regulate the use of fertilizers is a serious matter that must be addressed at the initiative of the local government. "

Regarding the full report of the UPCT, Manuel Padín criticizes that his group "has been waiting since March for the PSOE Government to send it to us, I do not know what interest there may be in not making it known to the opposition of this City Council."

"Although we know that direct responsibility is held by those who governed when these anomalies occurred, the PP, and those who occupied the local executive when the report arrived, the MC party, is the current local government (PSOE) which has to has to take the reins of this matter, offer all the explanations and learn what happened to establish the appropriate preventive protocols so that something like this can not be repeated in this municipality, "said the orange spokesman who recalled that" the waste management and the requirement of compliance with municipal regulations, as well as the investments needed to improve the system and to comply with European regulations and the regional plan. "

On the other hand, Citizens has recalled the regional administration requested months ago to municipalities to indicate the investments that have been made and the measures and investments they plan to carry out to meet the objectives of the Waste Directive, the Law of Waste and the Regional Waste Plan, both for the reception and the review of waste, "we could benefit from future investments with Feder funds but neither the City Council has informed of what state these efforts are, an issue that we will analyze together with our colleagues in the Assembly, in the next few days, "said Manuel Padín.
