The mayor considers it intolerable that the ministry is considering an alternative to arrival of the AVE to Cartagena without burying and not before 2022 (11/05/2018)

The City of Cartagena has participated this morning in the Technical Commission of High Speed that has met in Madrid to address the different alternatives for the arrival of the AVE to the municipality.

In this meeting, the construction of a line on the surface has been considered as the most viable option and it would not be completed before 2022, something that the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, considers unacceptable.

The two proposals proposed by ADIF at the meeting attended by councilor Francisco Aznar, are the following:

Which first of them, defended by the Autonomous Community, has a budget of execution that can reach 66.6 million euros and a term of at least 45 months.

In addition this option does not contemplate the burial on arrival in the city, proposing that the train enters Cartagena passing over the A-30, forcing the elimination of the current viaduct and building a tunnel under the highway.

"This option would condemn the natural growth of the city by El Hondón, something that is totally unacceptable.

It is incomprehensible that for Cartagena do not serve other proposals that are being implemented in municipalities such as Lorca or Murcia, "said the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón.

The second alternative considers the burial of the arrival of the AVE to Cartagena and has a cost of 137.70 million euros and an execution period of 76 months, which is not viable for the mayor.

"This option is absolutely unacceptable.

The deadlines can be shortened with political will and budget.

The central government must stop punishing Cartagena.

Our railway infrastructures are third-world.

We need solutions and under no circumstances can we afford to wait more than six years for the AVE to reach our municipality.

We must remind the central government that we are the second municipality in this region, that we have the fourth port in Spain in terms of revenues, that we have one of the most important industrial centers in the country and that we do not stop growing as a tourist destination.

If in spite of that he still thinks that we can wait more than six years to have AVE is that Cartagena is not interested in the least, "said Ana Belén Castejón.

In the Technical Commission that has been held this morning has participated a delegation of the City of Cartagena, led by the councilor for Sustainable Development, Francisco Aznar, who has defended the need for high speed to reach Cartagena buried to avoid mortgaging urban development from the city to the southeast.

Even so, the mayor has said that the best option for the arrival of the AVE to the municipality is still the western option.

"The proposal of the ministry is born small because in just a few years, the line will be insufficient to support the merchandise traffic of our port and our industries and companies, making it compatible with the AVE and commuter trains.

That is why we believe that the western alternative is still the best, "said Aznar.
