The Roman Theatre of Cartagena receives 261,000 visitors since its opening and has become one of the most visited in Spain (17/05/2010)

Valcárcel highlights the importance of the Europa Nostra Award, which places the region as "an international" in heritage conservation, as well as assist the promotion of the Theater

This site has been featured as "Museum Month" in the prestigious web portal of the Association of Professional Security Heritage and Museums

The President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, said today that the Roman Theatre of Cartagena has become one of the most visited museum spaces and important of Spain thanks to more than 261,000 visitors received since its opening in July 2008 and of which 120,000 have done so in the past ten months.

Valcárcel chaired the Board of Trustees of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena, where he noticed the smooth running of the museum, since the public opening of the new exhibition center has provided an important boost for the city for tourism Cartagena and the entire region.

The museum, visited by citizens of virtually all the Spanish provinces, is also a destination and focus of a significant number of students and scholars in History, Art History, Archaeology and Architecture, among other disciplines.

Among the activities during this year, highlights the launch of the Center for the Study of Roman architecture, which houses all the information that has been generated on this monument in the 20 years of archaeological excavations, plus the five years of restoration.

In addition, it was reported the processing of the collaboration with the University of Murcia for the promotion of scientific research in archeology and Roman architecture.

The Foundation will continue to work to increase funding for the library specializing in classical archeology, and especially in Roman Archaeology, which currently has 1,500 volumes, some arriving by private donations.

Europa Nostra Awards 2010

During this meeting of the board, it was reported that European recognition has been given to the Teatro Romano de Cartagena, in the Europa Nostra Awards.

In Spain, the Roman Theatre in Cartagena, with the church of the Discalced Ecija and the Real Sitio de la Granja de San Ildefonso have been the winning projects within the 140 selected from across Europe.

The purpose of these awards is to recognize the most important initiatives of the European cultural heritage in different categories, ranging from the restoration of buildings and their adaptation to new uses to the rehabilitation of urban and rural landscapes, through the interpretations of archaeological sites and conservation of art collections.

The jury for these awards has been outstanding in particular how the recovery of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena for the integration of the monument in the urban fabric and its proper conservation and exhibition of educational and cultural purposes.

This award, as stated by the president "puts the Region of Murcia in an international benchmark for heritage conservation, and help to promote and publicize the Teatro Romano."

Also, the Roman Theatre Museum of Cartagena has been featured as "Museum Month" in the prestigious web portal of the Association of Professional Security and Historical Heritage Museums (Protecturi).
