The Australian research center invented wireless technology distinguishes a professor UPCT (25/04/2010)

The research center that developed the wireless technology has rewarded the professor of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and member of the Applied Electromagnetics Research on Telecommunications José Luis Gómez Tornero for his contribution to making a smart antenna which among other applications used for microwave treatment of cancer.

The CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) ICT (Information and Communication Tecnhologies) Sydney (Australia) is a telecommunications research center Australian equivalent to Spanish Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) which has among its achievements the development of technology Wi-Fi or receipt of the first images of the astronauts who landed on the moon in July 1969.

The professor of the School of Telecommunications Engineering has been named Distinguished Visiting Scientist "after a stay of five months in the Wireless Technologies Laboratory of the prestigious Australian research institute, a grant from the Ministry of Science and Innovation Spanish , under the "Salvador de Madariaga."

The purpose of the stay of Professor Gómez Tornero was the study and construction of a new type of antennas for telecommunications.

These antennas are intended to achieve in an original and inexpensive electronic reconfiguration property, which is that the antenna is able to modify their real-time radiation.

In this way, one could conceive, for example, smart antennas that are adapted to their environment, maximizing the transmission of data in the right direction and minimize interference in other directions.

Among other applications of these reconfigurable antennas are the treatment of cancer by microwave or radar on board the vehicles to avoid collisions.

This type of antenna is being developed by several researchers from the Applied Electromagnetism Group at UPCT Telecommunications, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Belfast (Northern Ireland), Loughborough University (England), as well as members of the CSIRO Australian ICT.

This honorary award has been given to the researcher UPCT the results obtained during the months of completion of the stay, and with the aim of strengthening links between this prestigious center of R & D + i UPCT.

The research on this type of antennas was awarded nationally in 2004 and 2006, dates on which José Luis Gómez Tornero received the awards for best doctoral thesis and the best doctoral thesis, respectively, in the field of Advanced Mobile Communications.

This award, in the words of José Luis Gómez Tornero "encourages us to continue working on this research, because we have the support and trust of scientific experts within and outside Europe."
