The Senior Day Center visit El Algar Leisure Gardens (18/03/2010)

Around a dozen people over the Day Centre on Tuesday visited El Algar the gardens of the Villa Ocioen Thomas Ferro de La Palma, a project that comes through a collaboration agreement between elInstituto Municipal Social Services and the University Politécnica de Cartagena to create alternatives for free time for this group.

In this line, recreational and educational activities organized through the creation and maintenance of small areas, while promoting the preservation of agricultural traditions of the Campo de Cartagena.

The Gardens of Leisure are small plots of land, 50 to 100 square meters, for the cultivation of typical local products: vegetables, legumes, etc., With the purpose of consumption of products but never with their marketing.

These activities take place in the Villa Thomas Ferro, in which they work about 40 elderly men and women.

It is located opposite the industrial area of La Palma and is owned by Private Educational Foundation Thomas Ferro, being ceded to use UPCT.

Participants in this project, retirees and lots of free time, have expressed their satisfaction with the development of it, as not only natural products to take home that they are a little financial relief, but also growing in the gardens, they allows a physical and mental exercise, while conducive to coexistence between them, talk about crops and improvements, solidarity and mutual aid.

In turn, the greater also provide important knowledge and experience to restore and maintain an agricultural tradition that is being lost.
