The unemployment figure for the month of February in the town of Cartagena represented an increase in 427 more unemployed, amounting to 18,569 unemployed.

As stated by the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, these figures show an increase in unemployment of 2.3 percent, similar to what is occurring in the rest of Spain.

Barreiro stressed however that is recording a deceleration in the growth of unemployment, since 2007, since January 2008, the rise was 5.5 percent compared to 4.3 percent of that same month 2009.

By sector, unemployment has fallen slightly over the last month in the industry that has grown from 1,563 to 1,553 unemployed, and construction, which rose from 4,513 to 4,465 unemployed, with the highest unemployment in the service sector.

The mayor has defended the need for changes in government policy to prevent the strike affecting the tourism sector and called for a reduction of VAT in this sector, to put it at 4 percent.
