The Campo de Cartagena stands in defense of its agricultural sector (18/11/2009)

The mayors of Cartagena, Torre Pacheco and Fuente Alamo, along with representatives from the three agricultural organizations UPA, COAG and BDA, have urged the Government of Spain to take measures to offset the catastrophic situation being experienced by the agricultural sector: a voice that will be heard by at least 5,000 farmers in the Region of Murcia attend the demonstration that this motif has been convened at the national level and to be held on Saturday, November 21, in the capital of Spain.

Among the measures that claim to include the regulation of the distribution sector, which currently generates margins abusive by the difference between what the farmer gets paid and what consumers pay on arrival.

Also requested to benefit from the presidency of the European Union, Spanish government to boost a firm policy of regulation of this sector and aid.

Pilar Barreiro, Mayor of Cartagena, Daniel Garcia, mayor of Torre Pacheco, and Maria Antonia Conesa, Mayor of Fuente Alamo, with Francisco Gil, secretary of organization of COAC, Manuel Zaragoza, secretary general of the Union of Small Farmers in the Region Murcia (UPA), and Alonso Gared ASAJA, have appeared this afternoon before the media and have staged the unity of all agricultural organizations and their municipalities in this area, considered of vital importance to the economy of the three municipalities of the region and Spain.

The mayor of Cartagena stated that 80 percent of horticultural production is exported Campo de Cartagena outside Spain, and 25 percent of all Spanish agricultural exports come from the region.

The current situation is of grave crisis and rising unemployment, and the Central Government should take action, he added Pilar Barreiro.

María Antonia Conesa has abounded in the catastrophic situation of the sector and called for awareness of Spanish society to this serious problem.

For his part, Mayor of Torre Pacheco pointed out that the economy of his town is dependent on agriculture and called for support actions similar to those that have occurred in other sectors as the banking crisis or the car.

The data provided by agricultural organizations are revealing: in 2009, agricultural income has declined by 26 percent and retail chains have been forced to lower their prices, payments have come to defer to 360 days and some chains have come to sell agricultural products below cost to attract customers, pulling prices.

The situation is unsustainable and in the next two years could close in the region about 3,000 farms.

The representatives of the three organizations hope that the representation of farmers in the region of Murcia on Saturday's protest in Madrid is historical.

About 200 are expected to charter buses, many of them borne by the councils themselves, such as Cartagena, Torre Pacheco and Fuente Alamo.
