The UPCT acquires the Ministry of Defence Club Santiago (17/11/2009)

The rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Felix Faure, said today during the signing of the acquisition of Club Santiago to the Ministry of Defence that this operation will give an overall unity to all UPCT facilities.

With the purchase of the club house, buildings, schools and colleges are connected in an urban area beginning on the Paseo de Alfonso XIII School of Agricultural Engineering, Naval and Ocean Engineering and Civil Engineering and expiring on former Seamen Training Barracks, which houses the Faculty of Sciences of the Company.

Secretary of State for Defence, Constantino Méndez Martínez, and the rector of the Polytechnic University, Felix Faure, signed this morning in the building that houses the sales agreement for an amount of 3,288,884 euros.

The purchase of Club Santiago will launch an ambitious program of expansion of sports, recreation and leisure at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena included in the project to get the campus of international excellence.

The proposed alignment of the 19,000 square meters of the club includes the closing of the pool so they can be used by the university community throughout the year.

In addition, the UPCT build a paddle tennis, a sport that has increasingly user demand as well as a fitness area in the building of the former NCO Club, which may perform different activities such as pilates or spinning.

These sports facilities will add to the squash court which is already operating.

In a second phase, the University also plans to build a sports area where you can practice sports like team handball, badminton or volleyball.
