A student of UPCT gets a mention in a European competition of ideas (16/10/2009)

Fernando Pombo, a student at the School of Naval and Ocean Engineering, has obtained a statement to be ranked fourth in a contest of ideas at European level called "Visions Students Competition" ("visionary concepts for vessels and floating structures) .

Fernando Pombo made his project at the University of Liège, in collaboration with the University of Nantes, during his stay as a scholar Erasmus in Antwerp.

This design competition aims to encourage students' creativity, and therefore, proposes to submit original and innovative projects related to the shipbuilding industry, so basic and simple and without budgetary constraints.

The project named "L4-02 A new concept for rapid loading and unloading, proposes a revolutionary system of loading and unloading containers on ships.

The traditional method is to perform this process by crane, a system that is very slow, so that ships must spend several days at the port awaiting discharge.

Fernando Pombo proposes in its project to install a magnetic mechanism in the container, and once installed, place the containers in a ramp to the ship, so that the magnetism containers allow themselves access to the ship, as if it were of an escalator.

Once inside the ship, aims to create an elevator system to place the containers at different levels.

To this end, the bottom of the vessel would also have magnetic plates.

Fernando Pombo is 28 years and is currently a subject failing to achieve the title of Naval and Ocean Engineering in the UPCT.
