EU citizens require Zapatero to change its policy on sharks (27/08/2009)

Fishing pressure on these animals grows scarce species that were once abundant.

Both the directed fishery and the accidental are endangering many species of sharks.

Ecologists in Action and the Shark Alliance presented in Spain the European campaign "The predator become prey", aimed at alerting the public about the increasingly critical state of these animals, and to pressure the Spanish government, one of the world's leading shark catches, to lead a sustainability policy in relation to these species.

Organizations and citizens across Europe required by October Zapatero to power a change in its policy of sharks.

Sharks are long-lived animals, slow-growing, located at the top of the food chain, reaching sexual maturity late and with very few young.

This is the primary key of the vulnerability of their populations to overfishing.

Spain is EU leader in sacks and is also among the top five countries of the world, a fact ignored by 90% of the Spanish population.

The European Union also has one of the world's weakest laws regarding prohibition of finning

Spain is one of the four EU countries that grant special permits to fishermen so that they can proceed with the removal of shark fins at sea.

Recently, the European Commission adopted the Community Plan of Action Sharks, requesting among other things, strengthened the ban.

However, Spain is leading efforts so that the regulation does not harden and be even more permissive.

Organizations and institutions across Europe are leading a petition to President Zapatero to radically change his political position and bet on the conservation of these animals.

The European campaign "The predator become the prey, which Ecologists in Action and the Shark Alliance presented today in Spain seeks to inform the public about the status of shark populations.

Sharks are great unknown, often associated with a poor image encouraged by the film and literature.

Many Spanish citizens ignored, for example, as demonstrated by a recent opinion poll, which consume shark on a daily basis.

The survey likewise showed a majority of the population support the conservation of these animals.

Campaign "The predator become prey" is intended that this support is made visible for the Spanish government.

During the campaign starts today in Cartagena, the boat of Ecologists in Action, "Goddess Maat", tour various Mediterranean ports where different disseminate informative materials about sharks and collect petition signatures to Zapatero to strengthen the finning ban.

Will be various educational activities for children and youth and public tours inside the ship enlivened by a little talk about sharks.

The campaign will culminate in Barcelona in October, coinciding with the celebration of European Shark Week (10-18 October).
