A score of young people involved in the preservation of the coast of Cartagena and the Mar Menor (15/07/2009)

The director of the Institute of Youth in the Region of Murcia, Veronica Lopez, and the director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernández, today visited the field of environmental work in Cartagena, where a group of 20 young people from different regions made conservation and restoration work on the coast of Cartagena and the Mar Menor.

He also attended the visit, Councillor for Youth of the town, Ruth Maria Collado.

The volunteers, aged between 18 and 30, perform tasks of production and maintenance of coastal and native plant nursery wetlands, repair and maintenance of ponds for waterfowl and recovery of traditional crop varieties.

They also assist in monitoring wildlife populations in coastal cleaning, marking and clearance of natural coastal areas and islands, removal of native plants in the Regional Park Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar.

These activities, as the director of the Institute for Youth, "promote the values of solidarity and respect between young people from different communities, and to make known the riches of the coastline of the Murcia Region."

The field, which this year celebrates its eleventh edition, started on July 5 and will run until the 19th of this month.

During this period, will be cultural activities and leisure activities such as guided tours to various museums in the city of Cartagena, trips to concerts of the festival 'La Mar de Músicas' sighting of marine mammals and birds on board a sailing time, creative workshops, social evenings, sports activities, games and water activities.
