More than 140 personnel involved in Cartagena emergency in the simulation of an earthquake (09/07/2009)

The old barracks of The Guide was the scenario that was tested Seismic Hazard Plan in the Region of Murcia

More than 140 personnel of emergencies, including fire, sanitation, members of the Local Police and Civil Guard, Civil Protection and Emergency Military Unit, participated today in the simulation of an intervention after an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 organized by region and carried out in the old barracks of the Guide, in Cartagena.

The exercise consisted of simulated rescue of a dozen people trapped under the rubble of buildings hit hard by the earthquake.

The exercise began at 08:00 hours with calls to 1-1-2 reporting that in Cartagena had felt an earthquake, and others who reported major damage to a former barracks, in which an unspecified number of workers works being undertaken.

Informed of the incident by the Emergency Coordination Center, firefighters rushed to the site's fire service and rescue the City of Cartagena and a Mobile Emergency Health Service of Murcia.

Sismimur

After knowing the extent of damage for a first report of the fire, Emergency Department Level 1 activated the Civil Protection Special Plan to the seismic risk in the Region of Murcia (Sismimur) and mobilized Mobile Command Unit the Emergency Department and the various intervention groups.

The Minister of Presidency and Public Administration, María Pedro Reverte directed the operation from the forward command post located in the barracks.

Intervention groups

The drill involved the activation of five emergency response teams and the Military Emergency Unit and the Security Forces and who is organized as follows:

Fire Equipment Fire Fighting Service of the City of Cartagena and the Consortium for Fire Fighting and Rescue Region of Murcia.

Their task was to control fires, leaks and leaks.

Search and rescue team, composed of firefighters from the aforementioned services Canine Rescue Unit of the Directorate General of Emergency and Civil Defence volunteers.

This group was responsible for search and rescue people from the rubble.

Building management team consisting of firefighters and Civil Defence volunteers, who devoted themselves to reorganize and bolster the damaged structures.

Their task was to coordinate communications between departments and manage tasks from the Advanced Command Post.

Participated in the drill also has a section of the Third Battalion of the Military Emergency Unit based in Bétera (Valencia), with its own communications equipment, search and rescue and health.

Also participating Civil Guard patrols and local police in Cartagena, who was in charge of ordering the vehicle traffic and access to the affected area.
