The effort made in 2008 by the City of Cartagena to improve bus service, reducing waiting time and encourage their use, has been rewarded with an increase of 323,385 passengers over 2007, according to the assessments by the Service concessionaire, Alsa City, and which have been detailed in the Governing Council Member, José Vicente Albaladejo.
In 2008 the number of travelers from the city lines reached 4,174,248, 8.4 percent more than in 2007, which recorded 3,850,863 passengers.
He was also a successful implementation of the new bus pass, a rechargeable card in their own buses and a bonus of 50 percent over the regular ticket.
So last year was used by 2,670,259 passengers: a 46.37 increase over 2007.
But perhaps the most spectacular data has been the number of passengers who used the bus for free, thanks to social policy that has made the City Hall, reached 297,637 passengers, compared with 40,541 who did so in 2007, with an increase of 634 percent.
These correspond to special large families and pensioners who are paid a minimum pension.
In 2008 also increased the number of kilometers traveled by bus from different lines.
There were 2,623,353 miles, equivalent to 65 and a half turns around the Earth, 38 percent more than in 2007, and the hours of operation, 173,744, 28 percent more than last year.
Finally it should be noted the number of buses in the fleet, which in 2008 fell from 35 to 43.
According to José Vicente Albaladejo these figures show the rise of urban transportation in Cartagena and contrast with which has been occurring in other Spanish cities with similar characteristics, in which the number of passengers in urban transport is in a decline estimated at around 5 percent annually.
