Bascuñana visit the Center for Early Care and Occupational Center Astus association in Cartagena (29/04/2009)

The Minister of Social Policy, Women and Migration, Joaquín Bascuñana, today hosted a visit to the different centers run by the Guardian Association of People with Disabilities, Astus, in the municipality of Cartagena, and designed for integration, promotion of personal autonomy and job training for disabled people.

Bascuñana toured the facilities of Early Care Center Our Lady of Charity, which cares for disabled children aged 0 to 6 years, and boys and girls under 16 years who require special care, but early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation are the main tasks it performs.

The center currently serves 129 people, including children and family, participating in various workshops for physical and mental stimulation, while allowing parents to participate in this training and get global attention for children.

The counselor then went to the offices of the Occupational Center PROLAM aimed at people over 16 who have intellectual disabilities and / or cerebral palsy, where they receive job training for enhancing their personal autonomy and social integration.

PROLAM serves 215 people and is complemented by an employment center where people with disabilities work principally engaged in the manufacture of artistic objects cast in bronze, as well as the upkeep and maintenance of gardens.

On the other hand, responsible for Social Policy Residence moved to 'The Shelter' by Tentegorra, serving 13 people with intellectual disabilities and / or cerebral palsy, and also attend the occupational center PROLAM to supplement the care they receive.

Bascuñana noted that the Estate 'The Shelter' is kept open all year round and provides not only attention to users but a respite care program that families can apply.

The director ended with a visit to the group home for mentally disabled that the partnership has in Cartagena, which began operations in 2008.

This resource is for those people who have sufficient personal autonomy to live outside the family, although educators have to help them achieve greater independence and are responsible for constantly monitoring the daily performance of people living in it.

Research Center of Biomedical Engineering, CIBID, was the last stop of the visit of the director, who noted that the commissioning of this facility "has been of enormous importance for the Region of Murcia because it is a systems infrastructure that has technological leaders in the field of research and the results of which primarily benefit people with disabilities. "

The Ministry of Social Policy, Women and Immigration works in all projects undertaken by the association Astus through cooperation agreements which account for the year 2009, a contribution of more than two million euros.
