Cerdá stresses that it may be provided with 48 hours before the air quality in the Valley of tailings and Cartagena (17/03/2009)

The weather prediction system may be applied to other fields such as emergency plans, forest fires, or natural disasters

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, said today that "it may be provided with 48 hours before the air quality in the Valley of tailings and Cartagena, on the occasion of the celebration of the Day Technical Demonstration System Project Management 'Aries'.

Cerda said that the Ministry will now assume the management of this system through the Control Center Monitoring Air Quality.

The 'Aries' arises from the installation of three electricity generation plants combined cycle at the tailings-Gorguel Valley.

Therefore, the Community has established a number of conditions to ensure that the Region comply with the directive of management of air quality and proposed a predictive system to implement industrial action plans in order not to exceed threshold limits for any pollutant and ensure proactive monitoring of atmospheric stability situations.

The 'Aries' A study of atmospheric dispersion in an area of 40 x 60 square-mile area of Cartagena, Mar Menor and Campo de Cartagena, which evaluated the impact of pollutants emitted by combined cycle plants before of its implementation, as well as meteorological variables that affect its spread.

The aim of this study, Cerda said, was "making a predictive model that can forecast weather phenomena of accumulation and dispersal of contamination."

The estimated project budget amounted to 1.85 billion euros, which were funded by the promoters of power plants combined cycle.

Meteorological modeling system

Aries has served to give the region of a weather system predictive modeling applied to air quality for the zone of influence of emissions from industries Escombreras Valley, in Cartagena.

The counselor noted that "the region has accumulated experience over more than 20 years in operational management of air quality."

In this regard he noted that "with this new tool we can ensure action on these emission sources more timed and more reliable, and can meet the criteria of the European directives on air quality."

The weather prediction system may be applied to other fields "such as plans, forest fires, or natural disasters induced by climate, as heavy rain, wind and frost, among others.

Not be ruled out including its possible use in other areas such as crop production and specialized agencies on the weather, "said Cerda.

The adviser also emphasized that these actions in the technical field have been accompanied by other political and administrative type, "which have made possible to implement a fundraising element to the main potentially polluting activities, thereby achieving the necessary financial funds to cover the servicing and network operating to extend surveillance and monitoring system throughout the region, through cooperation agreements with these companies.
