Counting stars against light pollution (13/03/2009)

Between 16 and 28 March, launched the world 'Globe at Night ", an educational and scientific program that intends to approximate measurements of night sky light pollution by counting stars with the naked eye in the constellation reference Orion and comparing the results with a star charts that are provided for this purpose.

'Globe at Night "is one of the activities outlined in the International Year of Astronomy 2009 in the project" Dark Sky. "

Participation is simple, free and open to the public and addresses the need to fight for the preservation and protection of natural heritage, cultural and scientific means to have a dark sky, unpolluted by artificial light and awareness to population on this issue.

In the Globe website at Night, www.globe.gov/GaN/ are explained in detail the steps and gives the star charts and parts of registration.

Simply find the geographic coordinates of the observation point, count the visible stars in Orion and enter the data via the Internet.

The observations are collected and recorded in a database and incorporated into a global map of light pollution.

Dark Sky Campaign, the Astronomical Association of Cartagena and the Museum of Science and Water encourage people to participate and call to participate in two activities 'Goble at Night' to be held in:

March 16 at 21.30 pm, Campus of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Paseo Alfonso XIII

March 17 at 20.30 pm, Plaza de la Science, Murcia capital (after the conference at the Museum of Science Dr. Rafael Rebolo, Astrophysical CSIC).
